Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Rathcline AGM
Friday night next 23rd November the Rathcline AGM will take place in the clubroom in Clonbonny at 8pm. Whether you are a member or not the club would appreciate you attendance and contributions. The club has a very important year ahead and your contribution at the AGM will be a great sense of support to the incoming committee.
Death
On Saturday 3rd November a dark cloud was cast over the parish of Rathcline when one our oldest and most popular ladies of the parish passed away in Tullamore Hospital. Mrs Masie Carroll, Rathcline, in her 97th year has been a hugely popular figure in our parish for a long time. She was predeceased may years ago by her husband Tom where she was left with a young family and a farm to run. She was not to be fazed by the hand she was dealt and her hard work allied by her great faith seen her succeed greatly. She raised a great family all of whom inherited her terrific work ethic. She was a wonderful neighbour and friend with a warm and gentle nature and her passing will leave a great emptiness in the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Until recent years she could be seen cycling to town where she was a daily communicant. Her cheery smile and warm welcome will always be fondly remembered. Her remains reposed at her son Sean’s residence on Sunday until her removal to St. Mary’s church on Monday for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass her remains were laid to rest in Rathcline cemetery. We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to her sons Michael, Sean and Vincent, daughters Margaret and Elizabeth, sisters Bridie and Evelyn, relatives and many friends our deepest sympathy.
O’Byrne Cup Final
Tuesday last all roads led to Cashel for the final of the Vocational Schools GAA final – the O’Byrne Cup – where they played Ballymahon Vocational School. Not since 2003 has Lanesboro Community College taken the title back to the school. The team and management travelled this year with great confidence of the hope of breaking that 9 year cycle of being trophy less at the end of the competition.
The game was a real thriller, a real ding dong struggle with fortunes swaying to and fro from the first to the sixth minute. At the final whistle the preceding 60 minutes could not separate them and it was on to extra time. Again it was score for score and in the end Lanesboro CC emerged victorious in what surely was one of the best matches played this year in and competition anywhere. Both sides must be rightly proud of their performance and their management teams must be commended for the quality of their teams. On a local side we must mention Brian Devan and Joe Rooney and pay special mention for their great work in preparing the team. The winning Lanesboro CC team on the day was Joseph Farrell, Darragh Regan, Jack Rooney, Gary Gallagher, Jonathan Sweeney, Sean Costello, Michael Cox, Owen Sorohan, Patrick Feeney, Shane Cosgrove, Eugene Maguire, Graham O’Brien, Shane Phillips, Diarmuid Murtagh and Jonathan Hussey. Subs Kevin Sorohan for Graham O’Brien and Darragh Kelly for Jonathan Hussey.

Good luck Wally
Last week John Evans, a Kerryman, was appointed the new manager of the Roscommon team and one of his selectors for the coming year will be Cloontuskert man Wally Burke. Wally was a great success with his term with the St. Faithleach’s senior team, reaching two county finals. Presently he is in charge of the Roscommon development squad and this elevation to senior selector is well merited. We wish him, Gay Sheerin (other selector) and John Evans the very best of luck in the year ahead.
WHI host talk
The locally based Wetlands Heritage Ireland (WHI) will host a talk by Ms Bernie Moran in Cooney’s Hotel, Ballymahon on this Wednesday 21st November at 8pm. WHI is a locally based community initiative focussing on drawing attention to the heritage, ecology and archaeology of the area.
The talk by Bernie Moran is entitled River systems – the super highways of early Christian Ireland. Her ability to read the landscape was gained in the wilderness of British Columbia where she worked in a school for Native Americans, participated in their outward bound courses and lived with them for two years.
She will present the possibility that there was more water and less raised bog in and around 700AD and will highlight the consequences of this for travellers of the time.

Nuggets of information
Éire is the name of our country, as Gaeilge. Eire, (gan an fada), means a burden or load.
(Those who bought, and kept, shares in Eircom may notice the absence of the fada).
Leave a legacy. – A plastic bottle deposited in a ditch, bog or landfill may, depending on the type of plastic, still be there in 5-700 years’ time. (That’s nearly twice as long as a “disposable” nappy).
Your descendants, however, may not be particularly grateful.
Harvest Thanksgiving
The annual Harvest Thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday next 25th November in St John’s Church Lanesborough at 3pm.
Special preacher at the service will be Rev. Nial Sloane, Rector in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. Rev Nial is a native of Gowna and members of his family still live there, his cousins live in Roscommon, the Simpson family. It will be nice to welcome him back to this group of parishes. Do come and join in giving thanks for the goodness that has been enjoyed during the year. The congregation invites everyone to come along and be part of the Thanksgiving. It is hoped to have a cup of tea after the service and meet and have a chat with friends and neighbours.
As this will be the last Harvest service that Rev Sandra will be conducting, she will be moving on in January. Her presence and pastoral care will be missed as she has made many friends during the last 8 years that she has spent with us. It is hoped to have all her friends at this service to wish her well.
Lanesboro Badminton Club
The club are holding a fundraising table quiz on Friday 30th November 9pm in Clarkes Bar. Tables of 4 with refreshments and spot prizes on the night!!! Proceeds go towards the running of the club which has the largest Junior and Adult membership in the county. All support is greatly appreciated.
Van Robbery
On Thursday 15th November last a member of Lanesboro Badminton club, as usual, turned out for the weekly session in St. Mary’s Parish. He parked his work van in the car park and when he returned he found that his van was cleaned out completely of all his work tools and also a compressor. It definitely took more than one person to do the job that was done on the van. It is hateful to think that this is going on in our community and especially to a young man that is trying to build his future in his own business. We should endeavour to make every effort to apprehend the people that stole his property. If you were in the vicinity of the car park on Thursday last between the hours of 8 and 10pm and noticed anything can you please give your information to the local Garda station? These people must face the rigours of the law.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The final outing of the year is this Saturday, November 24th at Strokestown Golf Club. The stableford competition is over 15 holes and the results will determine who the Golfer of the year is to be: only 2 points separate Society captain Liam Rosemond and treasurer Colm Dardis at the moment so an interesting tussle is anticipated between them on Saturday for the top prize of the year. May the best man win!!
Tea and scones before the shotgun start at 11am will be served and the usual meal afterwards will be served around 3pm followed by the Annual General Meeting at approximately 3.30 pm.
A full attendance is important so that the Society can elect a good committee for 2013. Non-members are welcome to join in the discussion about what venues to play next year.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 14th November are: N/S 1st Phil Chalmers and Cyril Hussey, 2nd Frank and Frances Brennan and 3rd Bernadette Gillen and Mona O’Flaherty. E/W 1st Mae Casey and Noreen Dunne, 2nd Mike Flynn and Brendan Dowling and 3rd Mairéad Gill and Maura Hanley.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The attendance at the Shannon Gaels Minor AGM held last Monday week was dismal to say the least and extremely disappointing considering the amount of effort that goes into the club by the executive and each year. The executive elected for the coming year is Chairman – Sean Kenny, Vice Chairman – Mike Costello, Secretary – Seadna Ryan, Assistant Secretary – Ciara Myhill, Treasurer – Brendan Keane, Assistant Treasurer – Tina O’Dowd, PRO – Joe O’Brien, Assistant PRO – Michael J O’Reilly and Coaching Officer – Alan Fayne.
The club would like to congratulate Lanesboro Community College on their tremendous win in the O’Byrne Cup final on Tuesday last. The club extends its sympathy to the Carroll family Rathcline, the Rhatigan family Fermoyle and the Fayne family Cullentra on their recent sad bereavements. The club congratulates Fermoyle on their winning of the Division 2 Schoolboys Final on Saturday last. The Fermoyle panel was Eanna Mc Grath, Gordon Farrell, Ronan English, Sean Kenny, Bryn Peters, Liam Ross, Cronan Flood, Richard Prior, Harvey Myhill, Kian Gilmore, Shane Prior, Oran Kenny, Sean Maguire, mark Dowd, Shane Killian, Conor Sorohan, Áine Kennelly, Óisín Kenny, Niall Chawke, Lucy Ann Myhill, Kian Farrell and Gerard Kenny. The club also commends Lanesboro NS for their powerful display in the Division 4 final also in Pearse Park on Saturday; unfortunately they came out on the losing side against a very strong Bunlahy side. The Lanesboro panel was Duileach Ryan, Seadhna Ryan, Cian Glennon, Jakub Kajan, Briain Casey, Dean O’Reilly, Kevin Tansey, Óisín Mc Gowan, Mechal Mc Carthy, Rebeka Stavuse, John Mc Cormack Glen, Keith Irwin and Cormac Casey.
A special word of thanks must go to the coaches that have prepared the panels of both schools – their efforts are supreme.
The club would like to thank everyone that supported the play ion Sunday week in St. Mary’s parish and for making it such a great night for the club. The club would like to say thank you to all the ticket sellers and also to the many people that brought along prizes for the half time draw.
The club is delighted to be honoured by Longford county board as hosts of the 2012 county Scór na nÓg finals in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Sunday week 2nd December. It is a special privilege and I am sure that we will receive lots of local support in the preparation of the hall for the night.

An evening with real Stars
Monday evening 3rd December promises to be a very special night for those that have a special interest in personal achievements. Three very special people will be speakers on the night and there is no doubt each of them individually are well worth listening to but collectively this is a night not to be missed. Each man has achieved so much in their lives and also had their own family crosses to bear as they reached the pinnacle of their careers.
The beneficiaries of the night will be Roscommon Disability Support Group who will maintain and upkeep the new Independent Living Skills building in Derrane which will offer many opportunities to people with disabilities in the general community when it opens next autumn.
Speakers on the night will be local man Brian Carty who scaled the heights of his profession as a journalist to be chief GAA correspondent with RTÉ, Mickey Harte, the Tyrone manager who has succeeded in winning All Irelands at Minor, U21 and senior levels and Mark Rohan, former Westmeath GAA player who suffered serious injuries in a road traffic accident in 2001. Far from letting it get him down Mark just this year won an Olympic Gold medal in men’s individual H1 road race at the Paralympics in London.
The is no doubt that this is a night not to be misses as each one of the speakers are inspirational speakers and can enlighten and inspire us greatly.
Tickets for the night are on sale in O’Brien’s Corner Shop. The tickets are priced at €10 each and the event will take place in Four Mile House on Sunday week 3rd December at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served on the evening
