Do you walk a dog in Lanesboro Ballyleague?
If you walk your dog in the area do you carry a means of scooping your dog’s pooh? Recently there has been a huge upturn of owners allowing their dogs soil the footpaths and walkways in our area. Pooper scoopers are available in the holders provided by Longford County Council or in O’Brien’s, Corner Shop.
Allowing this to happen is an insult to all the people on both sides of the bridge who work tirelessly in cleaning and making our twin towns a beautiful spot to live and work in. It is very important that we all pull together in maintaining the beauty of our area.
We again appeal to all owners to carry their own pooper scoopers when walking their dogs.

Privileged
Something that we sometimes overlook is the wonderful facilities we have within a short distance of us. We are privileged to have two excellent theatres namely the Backstage Theatre in Longford and Roscommon Arts Centre. There are very few areas in the country that has the excellent choice and facilities we have right on their doorstep. Recently both the Backstage and Roscommon Arts Theatre launched their programme up to Christmas and both offer a tremendous varied and wide of evening’s entertainment. Being from the Lanesboro and Ballyleague area we are spoiled for choice. If you are looking a great evening’s entertainment you should look up the listing of either and enjoy a wonderful night.

The Croker Clash
Helen Feeney, last year, stepped into the ring for a hugely successful ‘white collared’ fight night. This year Helen is not stepping into the ring but she is raising the bar hugely when she is part of the organisers of The Croker Clash that will bring a very special night of celebrity boxing to the Hogan suite in Croke Park on Friday night 12th October with the doors opening at 7.30pm. The suite will hold 1000 people and I hope that there will be a huge representation from the Rathcline and Kilgefin parishes living in Dublin and the surrounding counties and indeed hopefully many from home will also make the journey to help swell the numbers.. Helen has invested huge time and energy in this night and we should all give her our support.
Helen has enlisted the support of many superstars and personalities for this very special night. Leading the pack into the ring are Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin and Jim (The Pink Panther) Rock who represented Ireland in boxing many times as an amateur before turning professional. Also in attendance will be Michael Carruth gold medallist from the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and the legend, that is, the wonderful Jimmy Magee to mention but a few. If you are available on the night there is nowhere else you should be and supporting an extremely wonderful cause.
The proceeds of the night will go to Pieta House – Pieta House, founded in 2006, is a non-profit organisation providing a specialised treatment programme for people who have suicide ideation or who participate in self-harming behaviours. Their services come free of charge and 80% of their funding comes from fundraising events and donations.

New Training Classes
Shaping–up with Bonnie continues to grow and she has recently introduced a new training class – Kettle Bell and Interval Training – beginning on Thursday 4th October at 8pm in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. The Pilates evenings will continue as usual. You can join anytime and there is no time like the present. When you are going along you are asked to bring a kettle bell and mat. Wedding
The wedding took place at St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh of Sinéad Gibbons daughter of John and Maureen Gibbons, Kilrooskey and Pádraig Naughton, son of Pat and Bernie Naughton, Milltown, Tuam, Co. Galway. Chief bridesmaid was Catherine Jameson, friend of the bride; bridesmaids were Regina Rodgers friend of the bride and Martina Naughton sister of the groom. Bestman was Tommy Naughton brother of the groom and groomsmen were Gerry O’Neill and Tommy Leonard both friends of the groom. Pageboy was Daragh Naughton nephew of the groom and Flower girl was Emma Naughton niece of the groom. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Charlie Mc Donnell, cousin of the groom assisted by Rev. Ray Browne P.P. Ballagh. The wedding reception was held in the Hodson Bay Hotel. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Lanesborough/Ballyleague Community Childcare
The playgroup for younger children will start on Monday 1st October, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9.30am – 12 noon. There will be a meeting on Thursday 4th October at 10.30am for anyone interested in resuming the parent/toddler group. Afterschool care is currently available at our service. Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club

Lanesboro Badminton Club
The club AGM was held on Thursday the 20th of September in St. Marys Hall. With the appointment of officers and the meeting taken care of its now down to the excitement of welcoming new talent and the commencement of hopefully another successful year of badminton for the club.
Open evening:- The club would like to invite all adults interested in giving badminton a go to their open evenings on the 2nd and 4th of October from 8.30pm in St. Marys Hall in Lanesboro. It is a well-known fact that indulging in a sport like badminton gives multiple health benefits like longevity, speed, reflex, intelligence, social life, physical fitness and most of all it’s a fun sport for all ages and its indoors so need to worry about the weather and those dark evenings. Hope to see you all there on the 2nd and the 4th of October from 8.30pm.
Shannon Gaels
Scór na nÓg is now back in season and the club is actively seeking young people to represent the club in this year’s competitions. Last year out sketch team reached the Leinster final and the club is hoping for a repeat from the sketch team and from some of the other disciplines.
The club is seeking competitors in quiz, instrumental, solo singing, set dancing and figure dancing. The club is also looking for people adept in all of the above that will take these young people and prepare them for the events. We have so many talented people in our parish and we hope they will share their expertise with our young people.

The club will once again host a Seamus O’Rourke play in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday 3rd November for one night only. The play ‘For Club and County – the making of the making of our county team’. Tickets will be on sale in the near future.
The club extends its sympathy to the Crooke family, The Green, on the death of Mrs. Pearl Crooke at the weekend.
Dance Classes
A new season of dance classes has just begun in Ballyleague hall and will continue every Friday night from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. All are welcome to come along and learn the Slow Waltz, Foxtrot, Old -Time Waltz, Quick Step, Jive and the Military Two Step. Ladybird Shop
The Ladybird shop on Main Street is getting ready for Halloween and if you have any costumes that have been outgrown you are asked to donate them to the shop. The Christmas club is up and running and it allows toys and other goodies to be reserved and 10% will be donated to Barretstown the charity that helps children with cancer.

The Parents Association of Ballyleague National School wish to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to everybody who so generously supported their annual church gate collection at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague recently. Baby Massage Course
A baby massage 5 week course will start on Saturday 13th October at the Lough Ree Co-op, Main St.

Set Dancing

Spanish Conversational Classes at Lanesboro Library
Are you interested in learning conversational Spanish? These classes are aimed at adults wishing to develop their conversational skills and are particularly suited to people travelling abroad or even for parents wishing to help their children with their homework.
The class will be one hour per week for six weeks. Each six week course costs €30.

Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
The club will be holding a boat competition on Sunday next 30th September in Lanesboro. This is an open competition and fishing will take place from 11am to 4pm. The entry fee is €30 per boat and all proceeds from this competition will be donated to the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club.
Entries taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour behind the car-park. This is a catch and release competition. All boats must carry a suitable tank to hold fish and all fish must be returned safely to the water. It is required that all anglers have club insurance.
Following the weigh-in the presentation of prizes will take place in the Yacht Bar.
There will be numerous cash prizes on the day and there will also be a raffle for spot prizes.

Lough Ree AC
Moyne! Why Moyne? Was the first thought of the scribe of these notes when the North Longford venue was selected for the Primary Schools cross-country championships. Apologies to those involved, it was a fine course, a great day, well organised and full credit to Moyne Community College for making their excellent facilities available. Can we say anymore? As the detailed are most probably recorded elsewhere in the Longford Leader, comments will be confined to locals involved (or their lack of involvement).
The morning started with 3rd/4th class girls 600meters. The Fermoyle girls got better as the race progressed. Surprise of the day for us was Aoife Nolan’s convincing win for the individual gold medal. With her teammate Aishling Farrell (4th), the versatile Róisin Brennan 5th (county Community Games medallist for hurdles, Connaught medal for throws and now a county cross-country team gold), Caoilinn Flood 6th and Anna Maguire 9th had no trouble accounting for the Killoe team for the title. Well done girls!
The Fermoyle and Lanesboro boys did not show, and this allowed Killoe to have a free run at the event and they had two teams in the first three. However, it is not a great attitude to have and this applies to any activities the youngsters may have an involvement in. in this group Ultan O’Sullivan (Gaelscoil) finished 10th with Oran Kenny in 12th place but without a team it was a lost cause.
The story was the same with the 5th/6th class events, Bryn Peters and Richard prior were on their own for Fermoyle, while their girls Orla Keane 7th and Áine Kennelly 8th were well placed but they had no support. Newtowncashel provided the individual winner in the 5th/6th class event with Maeve Dervin but the only team support came from Tina Casey while Lanesboro had to rely on Polish girl Patryca Jedrych as their only representative.
Killoe retained the Harry Farrell trophy – presented originally by the Lough \Ree AC- for the best school.
The club is looking forward to the Roscommon Primary Schools cross-country and hoping that we will have more involved. After all “stamina” is an essential ingredient in most sporting activities.
Road running will continue every Tuesday evening in Clonbonny at 6pm, until the time changes. Hopefully more and more young people will turn out on Tuesday evenings.
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Junior Ladies Championship Final: Pride of the parish goes to our Junior Ladies & their management on their victory in the Junior B Ladies Championship County Final on Saturday last. Laura Mc Loone opened the scoring with a point for St. Faithleachs, followed by another from Siobhan Ormsby. St. Barry’s scored a point before Kelly Murphy was on target with a goal & another point for St. Faithleachs. St. Barry’s added 5 more points & St. Faithleach’s added 3 more points along with a cracking goal from Laura Mc Loone leaving the half-time scoreline – St. Faithleachs 2-06 St. Barry’s 0-6.
The opening of the second-half saw points from Kelly Murphy & Laura Mc Loone and goalkeeper, Claire Kenny pulled off a great save before St. Barry’s were awarded a penalty. St. Barry’s secured the goal & followed with 2 points. Both teams displayed some fine football resulting in 2 points for each side before the full-time whistle, where St. Faithleachs celebrated their victory. Final Score – St. Faithleachs 2-10 St Barry’s 1-10. Team: Claire Kenny, Claire Brennan, Aisling Ormsby, Qona Cox, Janet Melia, Rachel Costello, Ellen Hegarty, Amanda Mc Loone, Joan Geoghegan, Siobhan Ormsby(0-1), Laura Mc Loone(1-4), Kellie Murphy(1-5), Aisling Lannon, Emma Donlon(Cpt), Michelle Malone. Subs used: Emma Kenny, Stephanie McNamara. County board chairman, Brendan Morris, presented Captain, Emma Donlon with the winners shield. The team along with their large following of supporters toured the Parish & were greeted along route with bonfires. The team were treated to a meal in the clubhouse following their success. Huge Congratulations to all Players on the panel along with their management, Denis Mc Loone, Steve Ormsby & Claire Kenny. Many thanks to Peter Creamer for his generous sponsorship.

U14 Girls Championship Semi-Final: Our U14 Girls are through to the D2B Championship Semi-Final, defeating St. Brigids 3-02 to 2-03. The semi-final against Strokestown will happen this coming Saturday 29th at 6.00pm in Strokestown.

U10 Blitz: Well done to our U10 Teams who took part in the U10 County Go-Games Blitz Day in Oran on Saturday last.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations: On the 3rd October 1962 following a meeting in St. Marys Parish Hall, Ballyleague, St. Faithleachs GAA club was formed. To mark the 50th Year of St. Faithleachs GAA Club, we will commemorate this meeting with a General Meeting & Mass in St. Faithleachs GAA clubhouse on Wednesday 3rd October at 7.30pm. We invite all club members past & present, all local parishioners & anyone connect with the club throughout the years, we would like to welcome you all. There will be a special “Photo Display” on the night with many memories “Down Through the Years”. Please come alone & share your stories, in what promises to be a great event. Further Golden Jubilee Celebrations will take place in the clubhouse on Saturday 6th October, “Reeling Back the Years” with Brian Carthy, RTE. St. Faithleachs Fitness Challenge: Launch & Registration night, Friday 28th September in the clubhouse at 8.00mp. St. Faithleachs Fitness Challenge, starting Tuesday 9th October for 8 weeks is Fun & Fitness for Adults. For those who are interested in getting in shape or getting active. All classes will be given by qualified Instructors who will cater for all levels. The emphasis is on having fun in a group and providing a safe & enjoyable environment for people to try different classes. Advice on healthy eating and living will be given throughout the 8 weeks. Rathcline GAA
Our senior team lost their final league game of the season by a goal to Clonguish on Friday last. The squad now face Fr Manning Gaels in a bid to avoid a promotion/relegation play off with the runner up in Division 2.
This week’s winning lotto numbers were 9, 11, 17, 24, 33 and 41. There was no winner of the €1,300 jackpot. The four winners of €25 each were Peg Farrell, Pat Cahill, Pat Mollaghan and Terri & Charlotte Skelly.
