Give Blood
The Blood Transfusion Board will be holding a blood donation clinic on Tuesday 18th , Wednesday 19th and 20th September in the Longford Arms Hotel from 4.30 to 8.30 each afternoon and evening.
There is always a great demand for blood by the hospitals from the blood bank and it is vitally important that everybody that can turns up on these evenings to donate and help save lives.
Death
It was with a great sense of regret and sadness we learned of the death at Innis Ree Nursing Home Ballyleague on Thursday last 6th September of Joe Farrell, Lisnacusha. Joe was more commonly known a ‘Ned’s Joe’ was a tremendous historian. A member of one of the oldest families in the parish he had expertise in all things agricultural and had a wonderful eye for a horse. His expertise was called upon at many times in the ploughing sphere, and the horse sphere. He was a tremendous footballer in his younger days and indeed his tales and memories of all the history of the Rathcline club were always a joy to listen to. He was immensely proud when his grandson Brian Mc Cormack followed in his footsteps onto the Rathcline club. Joe, as I can attest to, was a man whose company it was always great to be in as he was a wonderful raconteur and his stories of his involvement of draught horses, ploughing, the Turlough Races and his farming stories of old.
Prior to going into Innis Ree Joe was lovingly cared for at his home by his family. His remains reposed at his residence on Saturday last where a huge number turned out to pay their sympathies. His remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Sunday for the Mass of the Resurrection where again the turnout was both huge and representative. His remains were interred in Rathcline cemetery.
To his wife Patsy, daughter Jacinta, sons Ronnie, Paul and Joe Joe, sisters Bridie and Phil, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Defibrillator Training
The closing date for new and refresher defibrillator training courses is fast approaching and if you wish to be a first responder you should leave your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop immediately or phone Martina 043-3321107. Please ensure you leave a contact number when enlisting.
First responder is a very meaningful position to hold within our local communities and your action can and will save lives.
The date for the courses will be announced shortly and your support and training is vital. It is extremely essential that all clubs and associations in the community have members trained up in the use of the defibrillator.
Lanesboro Badminton Club
The club will hold their AGM on Thursday 20th September at 9.30pm in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. All club members are asked to attend. Anyone interested in joining the club for the year 2012/2013 is most welcome
5K Road Race
If you like to run, jog or walk or have an interest in personal fitness then you will be delighted to hear that there is a 5k run in Lanesboro on Wednesday 12th September at 7pm. This run is hosted by Lough Ree Athletic Club but is organised by Roscommon County Board of Athletics Ireland. This is the final run in the Ros 5k Series. The event is designed to cater for everyone aged 18 or over, regardless of experience or fitness level and will allow participants to get an accurate time for 5k on a suitably flat course measured by an official from Athletics Ireland. The course is a fast course so anyone seeking a good time or a personal best for 5k this is your chance. Entry is on the night and costs €10. Registration takes place from 6pm onwards at the Rathcline GAA Clubhouse in Clonbonny. The route takes the runners and walkers from Rathcline GAA Grounds at Clonbonny up the line and returns along the Longford Rd, turning right at Cullen’s Filling Station with the finish at the entrance to the Clubhouse. All are welcome!
Church Gate Collection
Ballyleague National school Parents association will hold their annual church gate collection at the Church of Holy Rosary, Ballyleague at all masses this weekend September 15th/16th. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Connections to Man of the Match
Last Sunday saw the All-Ireland Hurling Final finish in a welter of excitement. The game was a magnificent spectacle with every player giving every ounce of his energy to try and determine victory for their side. None shone brighter than Galway’s Iarla Tannion whose performance was truly unbelievable shone brighter than anyone else on the pitch and he was rightly awarded the ‘man of the match’ award. Iarla’s brother Niall has been teaching at Lanesboro Community College and no doubt his step will be a lot lighter as he faces his students with the memory of his brother in his mind. He also has the added bonus of the replay to look forward to and hopefully seeing his native Galway lifting the Liam Mc Carthy Cup after 24 years.
Points Increase in Tidy Towns
Today, Monday, the results of the National Tidy Towns were announced and there was excellent news on all fronts for the three entrants in the area. Cloontuskert continued their steady improvement in points as they edge closer and closer to the top marks. The winning locality was Abbeyshrule with a point score of 312 and Cloontuskert were only 19 points behind with a score of 293. Ballyleague continued their progress from last year with a jump of 19 points from 213 to 231 and Lanesboro again increased their score going from 202 to 212.
Words of credit must go to all communities for their continued dedicated work in the development of themselves in the Tidy Towns competition. The striving for perfection will, no doubt, continue but to date the committees and workers must bask in the glory that they continue to achieve year in year out. Congratulations to all involved.
Church Update
The ceiling of the church has now been installed and the insulation of the walls has now been completed. The extension of the sacristy along with the new baptistery and shrine is happening as I write. Compliments must be paid to the workers on the church site as they are men of perpetual motion as every time you pass more and more work seems to be competed.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The Society had a lovely day’s golf at Portarlington Golf Course on Saturday 25th August. The weather was sunny, the course was magnificent and a great enjoyable day was had by all.
The Captain, Liam Rosemond, presented his very generous prizes to the winners: 1st Sean Brennan with 32 points, 2nd Brendan Whitty 31 points and third Colm Dardis with 31 points.
The visitor’s prize was won by Brendan Carty with a great score of 40 points and the second visitor’s prize was won by Ollie Killeen with another excellent score of 38 points.
The captain also presented a prize to Vera Whitty who won the ladies prize. Many thanks to our Captain, Liam for a wonderful day.
The next outing is this Saturday, September the 15th, to Delvin Castle Golf Club; be there at 10.30 for the draw.
The Golfer of the year competition is still open for anyone as the results of the next three outings will be used to calculate the overall winner.
So keep the following dates in your diary: as well as next Saturday the 14 Sept to Delvin, we are in Moate on October the 20th, (11 to 12 o’clock) and Strokestown on Saturday the 24 November.

Road Run Commence
The Lough Ree Athletic Club road runs have commenced at Clonbonny on Tuesday evenings at 6pm and all athletes from third class upwards are welcome. This is one of the more enjoyable runs for the athletes and each finisher is timed so progress can be gauged over the period of six week that the runs take place
Learn to play the Piano

Pilates in St. Mary’s Hall
Pilates will commence for all in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro on this coming Thursday 6th September commencing at 7pm. Pilates is suitable for all abilities and ages. There are a large number of benefits to be gained by Pilates and they include; improvement of postures, re-aligns your spine, increases your core strength and stability, strengthens your back, improves circulation, helps prevent injuries, aids digestion, and improves balance and co-ordination.

Lanesborough/Ballyleague Community Childcare
The playgroup for younger children will start on Monday 1st October, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9.30am – 12 noon. There will be a meeting on Thursday 4th October at 10.30am for anyone interested in resuming the parent/toddler group. Afterschool care is currently available at our service. Carers Association
The Carers Association is delighted to announce that they will be opening a drop-in centre in Longford every Monday commencing on this coming Monday 17th September. The venue for the drop-in centre is the College Medical Centre on the Ballinalee Road and just across the road from the entrance to St. Mel’s College and it will be open from 10am to 4pm every Monday. Family carers are invited to call in where the open forum will allow answers to issues and to discuss related issues. All carers will be warmly welcomed and whatever advice and support available will be offered. Rathcline GAA
The club were saddened to hear of the passing of our Vice-President, Joe Farrell. Joe dedicated a large part of his life to Rathcline GAA. He was a terrific player, and was part of the full back line for fourteen years. Joe is survived by his wife Patsy, daughter Jacinta, sons Ron, Joe Joe and Paul and sisters Bridie and Phil. May he rest in peace.
It was a disappointing weekend on the field, as we were eliminated from the Intermediate Championship at the semi-final stage by Granard, on a score line of 2-10 to 1-10. The result ends our interest in this year’s championship and means we will play Intermediate football in 2013. Thanks to everyone who supported the lads on the day and throughout the year. We still have a couple of league games remaining, against Abbeylara and Clonguish.
Hard luck to the Ladies team who were beaten by Mullinalaghta in their Championship final on Saturday last.
Good luck to the Western Gaels Under 16 team in their B Championship decider this weekend.
This week’s winning lotto numbers were 8, 12, 23, 24, 28 and 41. There was no winner of the €1,100 jackpot. The four winners of €25 each were Marie Farrell, Lewis Hanley, Michael Sorohan and Joe & Mary Rooney.

Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
Last Saturday the club held a children’s competition on the hot water stretch of the Shannon. It was a lovely day out and nine children took part. The winners were; 1st Elizabeth Clyne, 2nd Óisín Mc Gowan, 3rd John Mc Cormack and 4th Dean O’Reilly.
Elizabeth’s catch included a beautiful tench at approx. 3lb weight. Congratulations to all who turned up and made the day so good. A special thank you to Bridie Holmes Fishing Tackle shop for all her help on the day.
Lanesborough Pike Angling Club will hold a competition on Sunday 30th September with the proceeds going to Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
It was just like a tonic on the first night back on Wednesday 5th September to see such enthusiastic players for a great game of bridge.
