Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Text Alert extends its service
The text alert system is now up and running. All mobile and landline numbers have been entered into the system.
Now that Rathcline Text Alert committee has everything in place they are inviting the people of Ballyleague and indeed the wider Kilgefin parish to be part of the system. The benefits to the community are many and being part of the system means we are all looking out for each other. Because of our proximity to each other the system is of great benefit to us all and also creates a greater security to us all as a community.
If you would like to be part of the text alert system in the area you should contact O’Brien’s Corner Shop where you can pick up an envelope and
The workings of the system are as follows: If you witness anything that you think is out of place or a car or van in an unlikely location or acting suspiciously you should immediately ring Longford Garda station 33 50570 or Lanesboro Garda station 33 21102. They will immediately check the situation you reported and if they have to act on it they will send text message to local facilitator who will immediately send out text alerting everyone to the need to be vigilant and report back to garda station what you notice. It is very important that everyone is attentive.
Death
It was with great sadness we learned this evening, Sunday 12th August, of the death at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney, London, of John Henry O’Neill, formerly of The Green. John Henry left our town in the 70’s and with him took many happy memories of his time in Lanesboro but also left many happy memories of our time with him on the Green and throughout the town. He is survived by his wife Sharon, son Daniel and daughter Kerriannn. John Henry is also survived by his brothers Bobby and Joe, and sisters Bernie, June Patsy and Maura to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
Heritage week takes place in St. John’s
St. John’s Church Lanesboro is one of the designated sites for this year’s Heritage Week which takes place from Saturday next 18th to Sunday 26th August. Lough Ree Golfing Society
The society had a very successful outing to Roscommon Golf Course on Saturday 4th August. A large number of golfers attended and it was lovely to welcome some new (younger!) members.
The society encourages new blood for their outings and the need is for youth to enhance the society; so if you play golf and live in the Lanesboro/Ballyleague area or further afield we would love to welcome you as a member or visitor. Ladies are especially welcome.
The course held up fairly well after the torrential rain on Friday the 3rd. The greens were excellent and a very enjoyable day’s golf was had by all.
The winning score of 40 points reflected the high standard of golf on the day and there were quite a number of scores over 30 points.
The society thanks Jim Finn and all at Roscommon Golf Club, especially the catering staff, for a very pleasant day. Many thanks also to the members and visitors for the great turnout.
The following were the results: Nearest the pin on 16th was won by Tom Nohilly who narrowly missed a hole in one! The prize was sponsored by Brendan Whitty.
The back nine with 19 points was won by Aidan Cassidy; the front nine with 21 points was won by Gerard Heneghan. The 3rd prize with 37 points was won by Sean Brennan, 2nd on 38 points by Colm Dardis and the first prize with a great score of 40 points was won by Colin McCormack. Well done to all and to the everybody who played.
The next outing is to Portarlington Golf Course on Saturday 25th August for our Captain, Liam Rosemond’s prize. Any member who has played at least once in 2012 is eligible to compete. Then the society will have an outing to Delvin Castle on Saturday 15th September. All enquiries to Frank at 0879730611 or any committee member.
Captain’s prize. We look forward to a big turnout for this important day.

Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club Search and Rescue unit will hold a social night in St. Faithleach’s clubhouse on Friday night 31st August. Following the recent fire at their clubhouse that caused many hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage it is vital for them that they replace all the damaged and burned equipment as soon as possible. Lough Ree Sub Aqua club is vital to us as a community as much as it is so vital for the search and rescue they carry out for families throughout the country. It is very important that the entire area comes out and supports the club to get back to its firm standing once again.
Ticket sellers will be out and about throughout the local area over the coming weeks and we ask you to be as supportive as you possibly can be.
Have you memories of Cloontuskert?
Have you visited the Cloontuskert website recently to catch upon all the memories of days gone by adding greatly to present day happenings? If you have any memorabilia that includes stories, pictures and relics of times past that can be included in the website you are invited to contact Padraig Best via email or Gerry and Martina Trautt.
The stories so far are great the pictures equally so but there is so much more out there that can help make the web site a great source of memories both pictorially and through story-telling. Be a part of it if you have something to offer.
