Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Cemetery Sunday
The blessing of graves will continue at Lanesboro Cemetery on Sunday 8th and finishing on Sunday 15th July in Clonbonny cemetery.
Huge Response to Text Meeting
On Monday night last in St. Mary’s Parish Hall a massive number of parishioners turned out for the ‘Text Alert’ meeting. It was brilliant to see the hall almost full to capacity for this very important meeting within our community. Text alerting will ensure that suspicious movement spotted within our community can be notified to Longford Garda station 043 33 50570 or Lanesboro Garda station 043 33 21102 and if the movement can be identified as unusual in the area a text message will be sent out to all residents that have signed up to the scheme. It is very very important that everyone in the area signs up to the scheme and play a part in making our community a more secure area.
In attendance at the meeting were our local Garda Sargent Martina Reddington, Gardaí Peter Mullen and Jimmy Mangan, the local Crime Prevention Officer Paul Mc Dermott, based in Roscommon Garda station and Peter Masterson who set up the first system in Dromard.
The setting up of the scheme in the locality was the brainchild of the local IFA and they put together a committee to deal with the set up. The meeting was chaired by Gerald Farrell, with Secretary Mervyn Johnston and Treasurer Alicia Mc Dermott playing integral roles.
The service is tremendously vital for everybody and nobody but nobody within the community should not make themselves part of the scheme. Representatives of the group will be calling to all houses in the locality seeking your subscription. Alternatively should you not be available, then an envelope will be dropped into your house and you may drop same back to O’Brien’s shop.
Wanton Vandalism
For anybody that travelled the road to Longford recently they would see the great work being done Killashee. The bicycle on the hill adorned with flowers on the entrance was eye-catching and in recent days a mannequin in the Longford colours was placed on the bike making it a tremendous sight. It was wonderful and inventive thinking and brought huge comment in this area. On Sunday afternoon some mindless vandal undone the great work and brought a great sadness when they not only took off the mannequin but proceeded to break it.
If you have any information that can lead to the catching of the doer of this dastardly act then you should without fail contact Lanesboro Gardaí 3321102 who are investigating.

Rathcline Claim Title
Well done to the Rathcline Reserve team that won the Division 2 title in Cashel on Sunday last over a very strong Ballymahon side after a titanic struggle. Being 4 points down at half time and not playing to their potential it looked to be another loss facing our lads. Some astute changes by the team manager Joe Rooney and his selectors turned the game on its head and the lads turned their first half performance on its head and they got some great scores to overcome the challenge of Ballymahon on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-11pts.
With a big number of the first team panel on the reserve panel it is a great fillip for them and the senior panel as they face into the championship and also their battle to retain their Division 1 status.
Well done to all concerned.
Shannon Gaels

The minors will take on Ballymahon Forgney at 12.30pm in Ballymahon.
Well done to the seniors reserve team on their final win over Ballymahon on Sunday last.

Aquathon: Well done to all who competed in the Lanesboro Tri Club Aquathon on Wednesday evening last. The event was a huge success and it was great to welcome various clubs to our area to compete. We would really like to thank the community of Lanesborough, Ballyleague and surrounding areas, who rallied around to help make the event such a success. Without the help from these willing people it would not have happened. The community spirit was buzzing in the Co-Op Hall afterwards. Many thanks again from all in Lanesboro Tri Club.

Rathcline GAA
Congratulations to the Reserve League team on winning the Division 2 decider against Ballymahon last Sunday. The team trailed by five points at half time; however a huge second half effort was consolidated by a decisive Colin Fayne goal. The final score read 1-10 to 0-11. Thank you to all the players who made the commitment to playing this year, to the management team of Joe Rooney, Albert Cooney, Johnny Hanley, Liam Connerton and Brendan Rhatigan. Also thanks must go to physiotherapist Ronie Masterson and to Pat Connerton and Chris Cullen for taking money at the gate throughout the campaign. Captain Kevin Hanley dedicated the victory to club chairman Cathal Chapman.
Congratulations to the Longford Men and to the Longford Ladies on their respective victories at the weekend.
On account of the county footballer’s progress throughout the qualifiers, our league game against St Columba’s has been postponed.
The club would like to wish a speedy recovery to both Stephen Farrell and James Hilton.
Congratulations to St Faithleachs clubman Diarmuid Murtagh and the rest of the Roscommon minor footballers on qualifying for the Connaught final. Also, congratulations to the Roscommon senior team on their victory over Armagh.
Sympathies to Paddy Nolan on the death of his sister Winnie.
The first draw of the Club Rathcline Scheme will take place on July 21st. The club would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the rescheduling of the draw. Members of the Executive will be present in Clonbonny on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening of this week from 9pm to 9:45pm to both receive outstanding money and subscriptions. Thank you to all those who have subscribed so far and if you haven’t subscribed yet we would greatly appreciate you signing up and supporting the club. . Each year, the club are required to repay €20,000 to the Credit Union after the redevelopment of Clonbonny. The aim of the Club Rathcline Scheme is to raise funds to pay off this loan, to ensure that the club can still afford to field teams and represent the parish. While we appreciate that the €100 fee may seem high, it works out at roughly €2 per week and with weekly draws, there is a high chance of winning a prize. Tickets can be bought through a member of the Executive.
Lough Ree AC Remembers
If you have been watching your television during the past week, you will have noticed that the European Track & Field Championships were taking place in Helsinki. Fionnula Britton, current European Cross-Country champion was best of the Irish when finishing 4th in the 10,000meters. Records show that when the Irish girl first won the Irish U17cross-country title in Dunleer, Co. Louth, Deirdre Hopkins, Newtowncashel was 5th in the same race.
Joe Robinson (Kilcock) also represented Ireland in Helsinki in the 1500m. Jason Gray, The Green, won the Irish U14 800m title some years ago and Robinson was 14th in the same race. In case one may think that the Kildare lad had an off day, Darren Mc Brearty (Letterkenny) another current Irish international was 8th also in that race. Jason, take note!
While we are reminiscing, let’s congratulate Diarmuid Murtagh on scoring the winning point for Roscommon minors in their victory over Galway at the weekend. The Ballyleague youth won the All-Ireland Ball Throw some years ago. Today there are some useful girls following in his footsteps. Apart from Duileach Ryan the boys would find it difficult to get the sliothar near his standard.
Cúl Camps
As school holidays are almost upon us our focus now changes to our local Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp. As in previous years these camps provide boys and girls – between the ages of 6 and 13 – with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games while also supplying each child with a full kit and gear bag. This year our local camp will take place again in Clonbonny from Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. Numbers have been strong in our camp over the past number of years and we hope that this year will exceed all previous years and break all records. Let your kids be part of a wonderful week in Clonbonny.
Discounted bookings can be availed of by visiting www.gaa.ie/kelloggsculcamps. If you are considering sending your son/daughter to a camp this summer we would definitely recommend a Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp. For all up to date information please see the Coaching and Games Notes in the Longford Leader each week or visit www.longfordgaa.ie.
