Minister opens Memorial Conference

Wetland Heritage Ireland (WHI) born out of Corlea Trackway Centre will hold a memorial conference to honour and acknowledge the name of Professor Barry Raftery. Barry Rafter was a very distinguished archaeologist. He held two significant posts Professor of Archaeology and professor of Celtic Studies at UCD until his retirement in 2007. He led the excavation in Corlea and his team discovered what is now known as Corlea Trackway. Professor Rafter died in 2010 and Wetlands Heritage Ireland are acknowledging his tremendous works and legacy.

The conference takes place at Ballymahon Library and Corlea Trackway Visitors Centre at Corlea. The conference will commence with registration and tea/coffee at 9.30am.

Minister Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State for Public Service reform and the Office of Public Works will officially open the conference in Ballymahon Library at 10a.m.

There is a host of distinguished and renowned speakers at the conference and also at the afternoon session at Corlea Trackway.

The entire event has been thoughtfully put together by the excellent conference committee that is part of Wetlands Heritage Ireland. If you require any further information or make a booking for the conference you should contact herigate@longfordcoco.ie  or phone 33407310/086-8133205.

WHI was founded to preserve and promote the natural and cultural heritage of the wetlands of Ireland. WHI is evolving its profile in a very constructive and sensitive manner investigating and developing a great interest and learning of the value of our heritage whose loss is threatened in the years to come.

By engaging in all of the projects in the wider area and in consultation with partner organisations and key stakeholders WHI aim to boost tourism, create employment and generally benefit the economy of the region.

This is a hugely worthwhile organisation and they would welcome many more people from the area to take an active part in the continued development of WHI. If you require any further information on WHI you can contact Joe O’Brien, or wetlandsheritageireland@gmail.com

Defibrillator course for you

We all appreciate the need for people in our area to be trained and reskilled in the use of the defibrillator. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to train in the use of the defibrillator and the opportunity for those already trained to up-skill to the new developments in the use of the defibrillator.

Presently there is a course for people interested for the first time and also an up-skilling course for those having previously done the course. If you are interested you should leave your name into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien before Sunday 10th June.
