Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Defibrillator course for you

We all appreciate the need for people in our area to be trained and reskilled in the use of the defibrillator. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to train in the use of the defibrillator and the opportunity for those already trained to up-skill to the new developments in the use of the defibrillator.

Presently there is a course for people interested for the first time and also an up-skilling course for those having previously done the course. If you are interested you should leave your name into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien before Sunday 3rd June.

Blood Donor Clinic this week

Your opportunity to give blood and be supportive of the need to have essential blood supplies available to hospitals and people in need of blood will come to The Longford Arms Hotel on this Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th, and Thursday 7th June. Unwanted clothes – closing Date

For the past number of months the rathcline Ladies have been running a collection of clothes and bed linen and the deadline is fast approaching. All donation of clothes must be with  Madeleine on or before Monday next 4th June as the collection goes away the following day.

Advance Notice of Cemetery Sunday

The blessing of graves will commence at Rathcline cemetery on Sunday 1st July followed by Lanesboro Cemetery on Sunday 8th and finishing on Sunday 15th July in Clonbonny cemetery. All those with family members interred in the three cemeteries are asked to make a special effort during the month of June to tend to the graves and have their cemetery in pristine condition for the blessing of their family graves.

First Holy Communion

The day proved to a beautiful and the sun shone brightly on the First Holy Communicants all of which left a memory never to be forgotten. Last week in my list of young people one of them, Ivan Johnston, was omitted from the class list.

Despicable Events

Friday evening last proved to be a sad evening for the Rathcline club and indeed for the entire community. We in our community cherish the fact that so little crime visits our area. We are happy in the knowledge that our community is a relatively crime free zone and the issue of security is low on our radar. We travel to Clonbonny many times and we feel safe and comfortable there.

Unfortunately, last Friday night all of our secure feelings were shattered when during the Reserve League game against Mullinalaghta person or persons entered both dressing rooms and proceeded to rifle clothing of 2 members of each side. A substantial amount of money was stolen and these young men. These men give so much to us through their GAA activities, they so much their time and energy in the name of their parishes they do not deserve to have anybody rob their possessions or be dismissive of them in anyway. We always welcome opponents to our parish with a warm welcome and the embarrassment we feel that something like this can happen is undoubted and as a community we can only extend our heartfelt apologies to all the players affected.

The robbery took place during the second half of the game. I am making an appeal to supporters, team management and substitutes of both sides, if you seen anything, no matter how insignificant you may feel it may be can you please inform the chairman of both club and also the Gardaí who are actively investigating this heinous crime.

Further to that on Saturday evening a local man who was after travelling to and from Dublin on Saturday pulled in to do his lotto in O’Brien’s on his way home. As you remember, Saturday was a hot day and the window of the car was down. On the passenger seat lay his wallet of which the contents were his gun licence, medical card and credit card. There was no money in the wallet and the time in the shop was no more than 1minute. When he returned to the car the wallet was gone. The fact that there was no money in the wallet it is more than likely that the wallet was thrown away. If anyone happens upon it can they leave it into O’Brien’s.

It is another dastardly deed brought upon our community and I would again implore anybody that witnessed this robbery to make it known to the local Gardaí.

We have a community that we are rightly proud of and we should not allow acts like this to tarnish our name. We should always do and encourage others to do the right thing and we should be protective of the good name of our community and do everything in our power to ensure that these recent events are a rarity and we should encourage anyone that knows anything to make it known to the relevant authorities.

What morons

We seem to be at a crossroads within our community if we are to judge what has happened at Clonbonny and the corner at the weekend. It has just being brought to my attention that the monument sited on the banks of the Shannon has had the top of the table taken off by vandals. The monument is tastefully designed and it is situated beside the duck pond on the Shannon Banks. The monument as you can see from the picture celebrates the memory of 35 people that lost their lives on a boat on its way from Ballyleague to Lanesboro back in 1701.

If anybody knows of the culprit(s) or has information that can lead to a successful prosecution please do not hesitate in calling to the Garda Station. As you can see from the pictures it took a fair effort to take off pic the table top on picture 3 picture.

Our aim is to advance or town and the communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague in whatever way we can  and the last thing we need are mindless vandals  undoing all the tremendous work being done by the band of hardworking volunteers on both sides of the bridge. A tremendous example of that work can be seen at the old Anchor Hotel where it was an unsightly landmark in the area and the Ballyleague Regeneration committee got out and painted and hung hanging baskets on it to make it much more pleasing on the eye.

You are asked to be supportive of the efforts of all and are asked to be vigilant and report to relevant authorities and vandalism in our area. The tremendous efforts of the volunteers should never go unnoticed and they must be encouraged and supported in all ways possible.

Tidy Towns

Congratulations to all involved in the reinstatement of the village pump on the Green. The committee would like to thank John L and the Fas workers, Larry and Eamon Leavy, the Green Residents committee, Hilary Sullivan and Mike Greene for their detective work locating the site of the original pump. In the coming week’s additional projects on the Main Street will be completed. Preparations are now in full swing for this year’s competition. Judging will commence in early June. To help with the effort, we encourage people to paint gates and perimeter wall, put out window boxes and hanging baskets and clean up unoccupied buildings. A clean-up is scheduled for each Friday evening from 7 to 8 pm, meet at Parish Hall. If the time/day does not suit and you wish to help out, please contact the Tourism Co-op office (043 3321977).
