Huge Investment by Ballyleague renewal Group
In a time of cut backs, doom
and gloom and negativity it is absolutely wonderful to see Ballyleague Village
and Renewal group bucking the trend with a huge investment in the development
of the area. It is a brave and courageous undertaking and as a community we
should be completely supportive of their huge undertaking. At last, we are
beginning to see shoots of hope and optimism from this very progressive
community group and let us hope that it will become infectious within our
community and be the fulcrum on which
the development of the community turns.
The
Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns committee is unveiling ambitious new
plans to re-develop the river bank area just south of the river Shannon bridge
when they meet in Sorohan’s Lifebelt Bar on Monday night next 6th February.

development is costed at more than €300,000 and includes provision for
replacement of the river Shannon quay wall, the development of new seating
areas, the introduction of new angling stands and the construction of a new
water feature on the river bank and all local residents who are interested in
learning more are invited to attend on Monday night at 9pm.
With
the start of Spring the committee will also be discussing the work programme
for tidy towns volunteers on Monday night next. There are lots of new projects
being discussed and representatives from Lough Ree Heights, Shannon Grove,
Shannonside, Ballyclare Court and all new estates are now invited to send a
representative to the meeting on Monday night.
The

Death
There
was widespread sadness we the news broke of the death on Thursday 19th
January at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, of Catherine Mc Cormack, Gortgallon. Catherine
came to live in Lanesboro with her husband John over 40 years ago and
immediately became a part of our local community. She was a queen among ladies
as everyone that had the great pleasure to know her can attest to. Catherine
will be long remember for her gentleness, kind and caring nature and she will
be sadly missed by all that had the pleasure of her company at any stage of
their life. She was a tremendous supporter of and always showered encouragement
to anything local and her passing leaves a great void in our community. In recent
times she fell foul to illness and she bore her cross with the nature that was
Catherine throughout her life. The attendance at her residence where she
reposed until the removal of her remains and again at her requiem Mass in St.
Cecelia’s Church, Curraghroe and burial to Cloontuskert bore ample testimony to
the esteem in which she was held. To her daughters Edel, Ann, Ruth and
Patricia, husband John, her loving aunt Nelly, sisters, brother, relatives and
friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy

fun. As usual refreshments will be served.
Letter

photographs, making pertinent points, regarding the quarry area. I have
investigated the comments and queries in the letter and if the writer, who
inadvertently omitted their name, contacts me I will relay the information I
received and I hope it will be to your satisfaction.

Table Quiz will take place on this Friday night 3rd February in Adie
Farrell’s Bar supporting PJ Maher’s fund raising drive for his trip to Kenya.
PJ is travelling to Kenya with the Building of Hope Charity that are going to
build and orphanage for blind children.
If you know the organisers you definitely are assured of a wonderful
night of fun and frolic and if you don’t make sure you don’t miss the
experience. A table of 4 will cost €40 and come along and enjoy what I am
certain will be a memorable night. I am assured that refreshments will be
served.
Lough Ree Sub Aqua
I learned
that the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club had readied themselves for a trip to Union
Hall, Cork last weekend to help out with the search for the two missing bodies from
the sunken Tit Bonhomme. This was a marvelous gesture by our local divers and
while they prepared word came from the coastguard to hold off travelling such
was the numbers attending last weekend. The club offered their services of
their divers for next weekend and they are now waiting a call later in the week
from the coastguard.
The
benefits of such a service and club in our community is enormous, thankfully in
the past number of years our community has not have the need of their search
and rescue service but they have been in many areas of the country assisting in
search and rescue and assisting grief stricken people in their time of despair.
Lanesboro Community Games
The
U-13 Indoor Soccer team played the semi-final on Thursday night against Killashee. Lanesboro, with their young team were not
expected to win this tie, however, through the superb team who played fantastically
and great management by Ballyboro’s Robbie Chalmers, they won the tie by
4-1. Through this win, the team gained a
place in the County Final against Killoe.
In the final the team lost through conceding two early goals, but the
strong Lanesboro team were in the game until the last whistle with many great
shots saved by Killoe’s excellent goal keeper.
Overall it was a great achievement to finish second out of 16 teams from
across the county. The team, pictured
below, was made up of Philip Chalmers, Cian Gilmore, Evan Chalmers, Cronin
Flood, Padraig Sorohan, Daniel Curran, Brian Casey and Seadhna Ryan.
The
last two draughts teams played in their respective draws during the week. The U-14 team lost out to again to a strong
Killoe team, this was made up of Aisling Casey, Killian Flood, James Gavigan,
Philip Chalmers, Aaron Farrell and Emmet Nolan. The U12 team with Brian Casey,
Cronin Flood, Sean Kenny and Padraic Smyth narrowly lost out to Granard. This completed our involvement in draughts
for this year and though we didn’t win any tie many of the games were very
close and, the experience will be good for the future.
Good
luck8 to the chess and table tennis teams that will be competing in the
semi-finals and finals during the week.
The
event to select the County Cross-Country and Mixed distance relays will be held in St
Mel’s College at 12pm on February 4th – U-13 1200M, U12 and U14
Mixed Distance Relays for boys and girls need to be formed – all children
welcome.
