Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Scór na nÓg

The Shannon Gaels club once again hosted
the Scór na nÓg semi-final in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday night last. As
usual there was great competition for all the different disciplines and the
full house joined in acknowledging the tremendous work gone into preparing for
this their big night.

The Shannon Gaels club had representatives
in Solo singing; Tara Leigh Lulham, accompanied by Sean Mc Grath, Ballad group;
Cillian Flood, Conor English on guitar, his brother Ronan, Chloe Kenny and Tara
Leigh Lulham, Sketch; Laura and Anna Peters, Lauren Guinan, Dearbhail Flood,
Stephen Tobin, Andrew Ward, Niall Keane and Shane Kenny, Quiz team of Aaron
Farrell, Daniel Curran and Stephen O’Dowd. Each and every one of them gave
great performances and the club is very proud of their efforts and the time
they gave in preparation for Saturday night.

Unfortunately only one of the clubs entry
got through to the County Final that takes place on Sunday night next in Ardagh
Community Centre. The club are county champions in the sketch and it was the
sketch that got through to Sunday night in Ardagh to defend their title.

We wish the lads and lassies the very best
of luck.

The club would like to thank Irish and
Cultural officer Michael O’Sullivan, the county Scór committee for allowing us
the opportunity to host the event this year. The club would like to thank
everyone that made themselves available to help out in any way on the night and
make the event a great success.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for
the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Ireland and around
the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s
health, specifically prostate cancer. A Table Quiz will take place in Clarke’s Bar

very worthy cause. A table of 4 will cost €40 and there is guaranteed a
wonderful night of fun. The organisers would appreciate a huge turnout and lots
of prizes available on the night. Following the Quiz a dj will take over to
finish off a wonderful night.

Death

It was with great sadness and regret we learned of the
death at her residence at Lough Ree Park, Ballyleague on Wednesday 16th
November of Mary Carty. Mary had been suffering for a few years and she bore
her illness with great strength and dignity. Mary prior to her illness worked
in Costelloe’s Nursing Home where she was a very hardworking and popular
figure.  She was a woman utterly
dedicated to her husband Brendan and two daughters, Charlene and Amanda.  She was a warm and friendly lady whose bright
and cheery dispensation endeared her to anyone that had the pleasure to know
Mary. Her remains reposed at her residence on Thursday until her removal to the
Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague. Following the Mass of the Resurrection
her remains were interred in Cloontuskert cemetery. To her husband Brendan,
daughters, Charlene and Amanda, grandchildren, brothers Billy and Ambrose Mc
Dermott, sister Margaret, aunt Chrissie, extended family, relatives and many
friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

A Musical Christmas

Quietly
and indeed successfully working away in Lehery is the mother and daughter
combination of Edel and Alida Loftus. Edel is the founder and director of the
Windsong Musical School. Specialising in the harp this mother and daughter duet
have place in the most prestigious venues both nationally and internationally. They
have the unique distinction of teaching the harp in China via the internet and
video conferencing.  This is an amazing accomplishment
and the school has really taken off in China through this medium.

Windsong
is presently in the throes of organising what should be a wonderful year ahead
and we look forward with great anticipation to the announcement of the year’s
programme of events.

For
this Christmas the Windsong Music School has release a DVD that is an essential
purchase this Christmas. The DVD features members of the Music School that
includes local ladies Melissa Coughlan, daughter of Joe and Ann Coughlan,
Barnacor, and Ann Marie Devine, Longford.

Alida,
who heads the Windsong ensemble, has also released a CD and it is compulsory
listening and shows a remarkable expertise on the harp from Alida Loftus. The
CD is entitled ‘Returning Home’ and this is a CD that would grace anybody’s
home.

Both
DVD and CD are available for sale in O’Brien’s Corner Shop at €10

Tri News

When
most of us are hibernating for the winter in expectations of Christmas and
maybe not adhering to that Summer diet schedule a hardy bunch of athletes for
the Triathlon Club had set their sights earlier in the year on one of the most
challenging and prestigious Adventure races of the season , Westport’s Sea 2
Summit. It is just that a 5 k run around hilly Westport before mounting ones
bike at Roman Island beside the sea and Cycling flat out to Croagh where the
bike is discarded and a race up Croagh Patrick ensues. Following the
treacherous descent , running , the bike is remounted and raced flat out back
to Westport where is returned to the Transition area at Roman Island and a
further foot race is entered in to reach the finish line. I think you will
agree this is not for the faint hearted and particularly at this time of year.
Adventure Racers do not do things easy.9 individuals from Lanesboro set forth
from Lanesboro to compete in this event. Despite their daily long commutes to
work, training time was obviously put in for Mark Kenny and Sean Farrell. In
the Spirit Event of this competition Mark pushed the eventual winner all the
way to claim a brilliant second place in 1 hr. 53 mins and Sean Farrell was
not  far behind at 1 hr. 57 mins which
gave him an 8th place. Incredible for a small club to have two in
the top ten in this very testing event. More was to come as PJ O’Neill romped
in just over the 2 hour mark at 2.04 and Martin Gillen close behind at 2.17.
Shortly after that Anthony Gillen and Niall O’Donohoe crossed the finish at
2.17 and 2.27 respectively. The lads had some female company from Lanesboro as
Teresa Hanly , Aoife Farrell ( Sean’s Sister ) and Jo Donlon who did some
extras miles on the bike just for good measure all gave very good accounts of
themselves and the Club was credited as making a very solid performance in the
competition overall.

Faithleachs side rock solid with a cracking goal from Ellen Hegarty along with
