Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Sympathy
We would like to extend
our deepest sympathy to Walter Henry, his son Niall, daughter Siobhan, Yonkers
New York and Ballymahon Road, Lanesboro on the death of wife and mother Nuala.
Formerly Nuala Mullooly, Killinure, Nuala spent many years working in New York
as a nurse. She was much more than a nurse to the enormous number she quietly
helped get work and settle in New York. There is a huge number from this
locality and further afield that can be grateful to Nuala for all her help. Her
motherliness made the transition seamless and her great warm smile warmed and settled
even the most homesick. She was a remarkable lady with a wonderful caring heart
and there are countless stories that record how she cared for people even
during the time of her own recent illness. She was a truly amazing lady and her
love of her native Rathcline parish never diminished one iota over her long
number of years in New York. No more her rebel cry ‘UP Rathcline’ will be heard
but it will always be long remembered as will her beaming smile and concern for
all arriving on the American shore. Mass of Christian burial took place on
Saturday last 30th July at St. Barnabas Church, 409 East 241st
Street and interment took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Nuala is also
survived by her sisters Rose and Eithne, and brothers Donal and Ciaran and a
large extended Mullooly family to who we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
Tractor Run, Barbeque and
Family Day
A wonderful and exciting
day is promised by the Shannon Gaels Minor Club on Sunday 14th
August when the club hosts a Tractor Run followed by a barbeque and Family Day.
The tractor run will commence at St
Mary’s Church and will take a route through the parish and will make its way
back to the club grounds in Clonbonny where it is only then the fun and lots of
craic will begin. The barbeque will take place immediately following the
tractor run and many local artists will supply music to cover all tastes. Some
of the activities on the day will include a Dog Show, Face Painting, Sheaf
Throwing, live music and many more surprises. This is a new and novel day
organised by the minor club and club would like to see a huge number of
tractors on the roads through the parish on the day. Bookings for the Tractor
Run can be made by calling into Martina O’Brien in the Corner Shop or by
phoning 0433321107. Payment of €30 must be made at the time of booking.

Cloontuskert Cemetery
Sunday
Cemetery Sunday will take
place at Cloontuskert cemetery on Sunday next 7th August at 6pm.
Thank You
Attracta and Declan Bohan
would like to express their sincere thanks to all that contributed so
generously to their recent church gate collection in aid of Our lady’s Hospital
for Sick Children, Crumlin. They would also say a special word of thanks to
those collectors that gave of their time.
One-Day Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
A one-day pilgrimage to
Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 21st August leaving from
Ballyleague Hall at 7am. The island contribution is €30 and the bus fare has
yet to be determined. For those wishing to avail of the bus and pilgrimage they
can make enquiries to Mary, phone 043-3321969.
Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
On Sunday 7th August Lanesboro Pike Angling
Club will be holding the Michael Casey Perpetual Trophy Pike Boat competition on
Lough Ree.
Fishing will take place from 11am to 4pm. Entries will
be taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour, the entry fee is €25 per boat with a maximum of 4 rods per boat and 2 rods per person. Membership will be taken on the day – adults €10 and juniors and O.A.P.s €5.
Rathcline GAA
Hard
luck to the senior team who were beaten by Colmcille in the Senior Championship
on Saturday evening. Lady luck was not with the team on the day and the match
finished with a score of 2-09 to 6 points to Colmcille. Unfortunately for
Rathcline, Ballymahon beat Dromard in the group which means that Rathcline are
automatically relegated to the Intermediate Championship. The team still have a
lot of league matches to play in Division 1 when the league resumes later this
month so we could still have a good finish to the season.
Congratulations
to Gareth Johnston and Anne-Marie Keogh who were married on Saturday last. We
wish them a long and happy life together.
The
club would like to extend our sympathies to the Mullooly family on the recent
death of Nuala Henry (nee Mullooly) New York, and formerly of Lanesboro. RIP.
Visiting Lanesboro Parish Hall
Following
the response to his last visit John King will be making a return visit to St.
Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro, on Thursday 4th August.
John is an energy healer who works with angelic energy to aid in physical,
emotional and spiritual healing. He also reads angel cards, oracle cards and

Harvest Festival
The
Harvest Festival and Working Field Day will once again be held in Lanesboro on
Sunday 28th August at the Glebe, Rathcline. It will take place
between 2pm and 6pm. Some of the features of the day will be Horse draw
Reapers, Vintage Tractor-drawn reapers and Binders, Combined harvesters,
Threshing Display, Craft Display, Home Cooking, Dog Show and a host of other
events.
Last
year the festival came back to Lanesboro and it was a great success. This year
promises to be even bigger and better. It is a day not to be missed. Proceeds
from the day will go to Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club and other local charities.
Admission is only €10 with children going free and there will be free parking.

Faithleachs GAA Club Grounds on Sunday last. The event was a huge success. Many

Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op
Great
effort is being made by everybody to continue the improvements in the area. You
are invited to think about any improvements/suggestions that you would like to
see in your town/parish .These ideas will be displayed at a public exhibition
in St Mary’s Hall at the end of August. These ideas will form part of an Action
Plan to be implemented over the next three years. Your ideas can be drawn as a
diagram, draw on a photograph with a marker, mark a map, write a short note and
it would be helpful if you would put your name on the sheet. The idea can be
anything that you think that would improve the area e.g. plant a flower bed,
row of trees, install a seat, an idea you saw in another area or when you were
on holidays. A steering group has been appointed and their names will appear in
next week’s notes. You can give your idea to any of those people or put them
into any of the boxes at the following centres: O’Brien’s shop, O’Brien’s
Pharmacy, Johnston’s Pharmacy, Terry’s Butcher, Cullen’s Shop, Casserley’s

Lough Ree AC
Conor English made history on Saturday in Tullamore
when he was the first member from the club to take part in the Combined Events –
that is five events in one day Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot and 800 m and all this at National
level. Needless to say Conor did not win anything but we feel sure he learned a
lot as did the adults who travelled with him to the Offaly venue.
The Carrowstrawley youngster deserves every credit for
taking part. He first came to the notice of the club when he won the hurdles at
the local Community Games and last month and went to the County Community Games
finals in Ballymahon where he collected a silver medal. The main reason for
taking the Combined Events was that it would give him another race at the
hurdles particularly as the youngster was so interested. As it happened the
hurdles was his best event in Tullamore. Well done Conor!
