Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Death
The
area was saddened at the news of the untimely death at Roscommon County
Hospital on Sunday 17th July of John Keane, Cloontuskert. John a
native of Doohoma, Belmullet, Co. Mayo had been sick a short time and his death
came as a shock to family and friends alike. John came to work with Bord na
Mona where he worked diligently until his retirement. If nature ever sent a
gentleman to an area then we were honoured to have nature’s gentleman in our
midst. John was a man whose religion played a big part in his life and along
with his wife Evelyn were most regular communicants. His gentle nature and easy
going manner endeared him to everybody that had the pleasure to make his acquaintance.
His passing will leave a great void in the hearts and minds of the many people that
came to know John. His remains reposed in his residence until being moved on
Wednesday to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague where his Funeral Mass
took place. Following Mass his remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert
cemetery. To his wife Evelyn, sons, Sean, Michael and Brendan, daughters Mary
and Evelyn, brother, sisters, relatives and friends we extend our sincere
sympathy.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The
club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to our club treasurer Brendan
Keane and his family on the death of his father John Keane, Cloontuskert on
Sunday last.
The
minor team had their championship match v Southern Gaels and at the time of
writing there are no scores to hand.
Under
13 team will play St. Francis on Friday night next in Clonbonny in a crucial
game at 7.30pm

Lough Ree AC
The athletic season (Track
& Field) as far as Juveniles are concerned is drawing to an end. What is
left is combined events and Community Games Finals towards the end of August.
For the first time in the
long history of the club there will be entrants in the combined in the combined
events where competitors take part in the long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot
and 200m. It will be very interesting to
see how they fare out as two lads have been doing training for the event. The
results are based on a complicated points system for the five events. This is a
learning curve for all here!
Reflecting on the
Community Games County Finals in Longford and Roscommon, Lanesboro fared well
with a fine collection of medals with Liam Ross the star of the day. On the
other side of the bridge the result did not come as good for the Kilgefin contingent
who won one silver and seven bronze in the younger age groups. There are many
quality athletes in the Kilgefin but their star was not to shine on the day of
the events.
Sympathy
We
would like to extend our sympathy to Pakie and Anne Feeney and family,
Rathcline and Peter and Maura Mc Loughlin, Ballyleague and the extended Feeney
family on the death of their uncle Tommy Keane, Edgeworthstown, recently.
Local book by local writers
Last Thursday evening a
huge number turned out for the launch of an anthology of Poems and Prose by
local writers from the Lasraí Writers’ Group based in Lanesboro. It makes
wonderful reading and it is, most definitely, a wonderful read. The contributors
to this book are Rosarii Beirne, Sean Cahill, Jimmy Casey, Kieran Furey, John
Killian, Paddy Laurence, Mary Mc Gushin, Rose Moran, Margaret Nohilly,
Josephine O’Neill and Colin Carberry.
The book is priced at a
very reasonable €10 and is on sale in O’Brien’s Corner Shop.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
Shannon
Gaels Minor were unfortunate on Tuesday evening last in the Championship
preliminary round against Southern Gaels on a final scoreline of 1-9 to 9
points. With what seemed like a
legitimate goal been disallowed in the 1st half as a square ball we
had to settle for 2nd best again. Hopefully we can make a little more progress
in the A Championship.
Our
16 team are out in 1st round of the Championship against Granard in
Higginstown on Thursday 21st July at 7.30pm.
Our
U13 squad played their last game in the league on Friday evening last.
Unfortunately we had to field a much weakened team due to holidays and in so
doing we missed out on a final spot in the League. This seems to be the story
of the summer at all age groups.
Our
U12 team had a great win over Clonbroney on Thursday evening last in Clonbonny
to make it an unbeaten run in this year’s U12 League so far. We are in Drumlish
on this Thursday at 8pm for U12 Blitz.
Our
U8’s are in Clonguish on Wednesday 20th July in an All County Blitz.
Training
as usual on Thursday in Clonbonny at 7.00pm for U6 to U10.

for the team. Best of luck lads.
Congratulations
to the ladies team on their comprehensive victory over Longford Slashers in the
first round of the championship.
Congratulations
to the Lanesboro Triathlon Club on a very successful triathlon which was held
on Saturday. A great day was had by all. Thanks to all from the Rathcline club
who helped out with stewarding on the day.

pharmacy to the new premises of the old bank.
