Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Engagement
We
send our congratulations to Laura Mulryan, daughter of Pat and Marcella
Mulryan, Church View and Alan Mannion son of Paddy and Margaret Mannion,
Stonepark, Roscommon who announced their engagement recently.
Eugene Maguire
Much
has already been written and captured on RTÉ of the heroic deeds of one of our
young men of the parish. Eugene Maguire, son of Ollie and Breda Maguire,
Rathcline, was along with friends by the Shannon on one of the few nice days we
had seen this year. He noticed that a swimmer was in trouble and this
remarkable young man, without concern for his own safety, dived into the
Shannon and proceeded to rescue the man in distress. It was a remarkable act of
bravery by Eugene and he is rightfully deserving of the accolades being paid to
him by all sections of the community.
There
must be something about that area of the parish as a number of years ago local
man Odie Lawlor – a neighbour of Eugene’s – performed the same act of bravery
in Dublin and who received his award in 1997.
Birth
Many
congratulations to Lewis and Martina Hanley, Lehery, on the recent birth of a
baby boy.
Rathcline Cemetery
There
will be a gate collection for the general maintenance and grass cutting at the
mass in the cemetery on Sunday next 3rd July. Your generous support
will be appreciated.
Sympathy
We
would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Tom O’Farrell, Longford Road and
the extended Fallon family, on the death of his sister Mrs Rose Eithna Regan,
Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon.

Triathlon
Saturday 16th July
The
local Trilanesboro Triathlon club will stage their inaugural triathlon in
Lanesboro Ballyleague on Saturday 16th July. The ‘Two Provinces
Sprint Triathlon’ promises to be a wonderful day for competitors and spectators
alike. The preparation for the staging of their inaugural event has been
detailed and nothing is being left to chance so much so that each discipline is
measured to the exact distance – 750 meter swim,
20 Kilometer bike, 5 Kilometer run.
Judging by the
response so far and with another month to go it is expected that there will be
a huge entry.
Trilanesboro is
only less than one year in existence and already it has attracted huge interest
and the club is competitive almost every weekend. If you would like to find out
more about the club log onto their website www.trilanesboro.com

Thank You
The Co-op would
like to thank everybody who helped during the recent community clean up, your
help is very much appreciated and it made a great difference with many projects
completed during the evening’s work. It is planned to have another clean up
during the coming weeks. In recent weeks, much work has been done around the
town, with painting, planter boxes and the recent addition of hanging baskets
on all ESB poles from the bridge to the church. Last weekend, the newly planted
row boat was placed at the corner. The Co-op would like to thank Dessie Watts
for kindly donating the boat, Pat Connolly for his expert repair work and
Vinnie Mc Gowan, Mark Casey, Joe Mc Grath, John L Farrell and the FAS workers,
Brendan Keane and Seadna Ryan for painting and planting the boat. The co-op
hopes that you are seeing the town tidy up and looking much better and it hopes
that with each week, additional work can be done. You can help by coming to the
clean-up nights, painting a front wall/gate, sweeping a foot path, putting up a
hanging basket or window box, cleaning up a vacant house or site and together
the town will continue to improve over the coming months. The co-op encourages
everybody to help out, business owners and residents to keep the improvements
going.
Sympathy
We would like to
extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Katie Costello and family, Lisreevagh, on
the death of Bridgie Killian, Newtowncashel last week.
Work
Scheme
The work scheme
where members of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club – boys and girls – are available
for all odd jobs and work on bogs, footing and bringing home turf, mowing
lawns. To date the scheme is already working excellently and if anybody out
there wants some work done they can contact Jimmy Flood, Seadna Ryan, Brendan
Keane, Sean Kenny or Joe O’Brien.
Huge Parish success at Community Games
On Sunday last, the top young
athletes of the county descended on Ballymahon for the Community Games Track
and Field County Finals. The first and most important success for
Lanesboro was our huge representation, with
a team of 41 children taking part. Each and every child performed out of
their skin and were competitive in every event, making the large Lanesboro
following very proud. Overall Lanesboro won six Gold medals, two Silver medals
and five Bronze medals taking home a total of 25 medals with relay’s
counted. Indeed this under represents how well the Lanesboro Athletes
performed because many others only marginally missed out on medals by finishing
in 4th place.
Many thanks to Lanesboro Athletic
club’s Fabian Walsh, Steve and Marie Peters and Margaret Mullooly and also the
athletes parents for having the children so well turned out. The hard
work of the Community Games committee, especially Pauline Casey ensured smooth
co-ordinating of Lanesboro’s entry. John Rooney and Sharon Brady, with
all the games organising committee gave their weekend to ensure the games were
efficiently run, while Mary Sorohan ensured all the athletes made it to the
start line. The children looked very smart
in their new gear sponsored by the ESB Lough Ree Power.
The Gold medal winners were:
Anna Peters U-14 Long Jump, Tanya Farrell U-14 Long Puck, Enda Berga U-16
Javelin, Liam Ross U-10 100M, Aisling Casey U13 Walking race and the Girls U-14
Relay team – Haley Rooney, Tanya Farrell, Sarah Farrell, Anna Peters and
Niamh Chalke.
Silver Medals were won by Dean
O’Reilly U-12 Ball Throw and Conor English U-14 80M Hurdles.
Bronze Medals were won by Sarah
Farrell U-14 Shot Putt, Sean Casey U-16 100M, Orla Keane in the U-12 100M, The
U-15 Mixed Relay team – Mark Lyons, Dearbhail Flood, Laura Peters and Eoin
Sorohan and the U-10 Mixed Relay team – Liam Ross, Aoife Nolan, Ashling Farrell
and Richard Prior with subs Aoife English and Seadna Ryan.
Congratulations again to
all the athletes and best of luck to the gold medal winners who will be representing
Longford in the all-Ireland finals in Athlone in August.
Rathcline GAA
Well
done to Longford on their victory over Cavan in the All-Ireland qualifiers.
Next up for them is Tyrone in Pearse Park on the weekend of the 9th July.
Longford’s progress in this year’s championship will determine when Rathcline
are out in the Senior Championship. Next up for the team will be Ballymahon
followed by the last group game against Colmcille. There will be more detail
about these fixtures in the coming weeks.
We
would like to extend our sympathies to the Killian family, Newtowncashel, on
the recent death of Bridget Killian.
Kilgefin Community Games
Thanks to all 32
athletes who represented Kilgefin at the County Athletics finals and well done
to those who won medals. These were Bronze; Darragh Kelly, Jennifer Brennan and
Conor Gannon. Silver: Niamh Parker and Ronan Banahan. Thanks to Claire, Sarah and
Catherine Brennan and Eimear Collier who helped the track officials and thanks
to all the parents who helped keep Kilgefin Community Games active. A special
thanks to St. Faithleachs who once again put up a fantastic venue for our
sports.
Bingo Winner
Congratulations
to Joe Rooney Rathcline who won €10,500 in the Shannonside Bingo announced
today, Monday.
Lough Ree AC
Pride of place
this week must go to James Browne and Bryn Peters who made the long journey to
Templemore and represented the club at the All-Ireland Championships for the
Under 9 to Under 11 age groups at the Tipperary venue.
James and Bryn were
competing in the U11 Ball Throw, a twosome team event. The boys, 3rd
in Connaught would have been long odds to get into the medals. They improved on
their efforts from Sligo and finished 8th of 15 pair and only a
short distance from a more exalting placing. One cannot as for more!
Detailed
results, no doubt will appear elsewhere in these notes. In the meantime, the
club congratulates their athletes who won medals and hopefully will represent
County Longford at the National Finals in Athlone. The gold medal winners were
Aisling Casey 900m Race Walk, Enda Berger Javelin, Anna Peters Long Jump, Tanya
Farrell Long Puck, Liam Ross 100m U10 and the U14 relay team of the Farrell
twins – Sarah & Tanya, Anna peters and Hayley Rooney. The youngest of the
group, Liam Ross, had the hardest path to gold and must be the Star of the day.
All the silver
and bronze results at the time of writing but Conor English must be
complimented on his silver in the U14 hurdles. He worked harder than most for
his success. Indeed all who took part and represented the parish deserves the
clubs gratitude.
Ladies Day at Roscommon Races
Monday next sees
the beginning of the two-day July meetings at Roscommon Racecourse. Monday 4th
July is a day for the Ladies and bring out the glamour and beauty for Ladies
Day. The best dressed lady will receive a €2,000 shopping voucher from
Littlewoods and the 10 runners-up will receive €100 vouchers. The judge with
the unenviable task will be Today FM star Mairéad Farrell. The first race will
start at 6pm on Monday. Again on Tuesday the first race will commence at 6pm
with an evening of top class National Hunt racing.
Following racing
on both nights the hugely popular Race Dance will take place in the Abbey Hotel
and it always finishes off a great day.
Don’t miss the
excitement of the evening and night
