Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 20th June 2011

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

President elect come to Lanesboro

Monday
evening 4th July is a red lettered evening in the annals of Shannon
Gaels Minor Football Club. GAA President elect, Liam O’Neill, has graciously
accepted the invitation of the minor club to visit our club.

Liam,
when he accepted the invitation, asked to meet all parents of the club. Rather
than the traditional stand and speak to the attendance he intimated that he
would prefer to carry out a ‘club exercise’ which necessitates the full input
of all parents. This ‘club exercise’ will prove to be hugely beneficial to the
club and it is totally dependent on all parents and parents of prospective club
members attending and participating. It also provides a greater connection with
the future GAA President and the clubs parents.

This
is a wonderful honour and privilege for us especially as Liam wants to work
with the minor club and its parents. The Shannon Gaels Minor club continues to
do unprecedented work for all its youngsters under their care, be it on the
field of play, those involved with Scór na nÓg or those with Search for a Star.
To have the next President of the GAA coming to meet and work with us (from the
grassroots to the very top) is something we should dearly cherish and we should
make every effort to ensure he fondly remembers his visit to Shannon Gaels
Minor Club.

The
‘club exercise’ will help greatly determine the direction of the Club for the coming
years. We want new fresh ideas of what you want Your Club to become for you and your children. It is
indescribable how important your views are to us, so we want to hear what you
have to say.

This
is a very vital occasion for the club and a full turnout of parents of children
from the cradle to under 18, is expected. Over the next two weeks you will be
invited to attend and it is hugely important that your response will be
positive. The club would appreciate everybody attending to confirm as soon as
possible so as they can make their arrangements to cater for the number. If you
need further information contact chairman Jimmy Flood or PRO/coordinator Joe
O’Brien.

Triathlon Saturday 16th July

The
local Trilanesboro Triathlon club will stage their inaugural triathlon in
Lanesboro Ballyleague on Saturday 16th July. The ‘Two Provinces
Sprint Triathlon’ promises to be a wonderful day for competitors and spectators
alike. The preparation for the staging of their inaugural event has been
detailed and nothing is being left to chance so much so that each discipline is
measured to the exact distance – 750 meter swim,
20 Kilometer bike, 5 Kilometer run.

Judging by the response so far and with another month
to go it is expected that there will be a huge entry.

Trilanesboro is only less than one year in existence
and already it has attracted huge interest and the club is competitive almost
every weekend. If you would like to find out more about the club log onto their
website www.trilanesboro.com

Death

The local area was greatly saddened
with the news of the death of Angela Nolan, Shannon Heights, Ballyleague, on
Sunday 12th June at her residence. Angela along with her husband
John moved to Ballyleague some 15 years ago. She was fiercely proud native of
Dublin. During her time in the area Angela became a very popular lady and that
was clear to be seen with the deep sense of grief that was evident at the news
of her death. Angela had been sick for some time and she fought her illness
with a wonderful determination and dignity. Those who came to know her are all
the poorer at her loss. Her remains were removed from her residence to the
Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Monday and following her funeral mass
her remains were laid to rest in her native Dublin. To her husband John, sons
Patrick and Jason, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Sean
Kilroy

On Friday last 17th June
news filtered through on the death of one of our most loved adopted sons, Sean
Kilroy. Sean moved from his native Offaly to Lanesboro in the 70’s to work in
Lanesboro’s ESB power station. It was great to have an All-Ireland medal winner
moving into your town and more importantly it was marvellous that he was going
to play with our club. Sean was an all-round sportsman who also excelled at
soccer where he played with Longford Town and also an adept golfer. Much more
than that he was a man with a great personality, a wonderful warm smile that greeted
both friend and stranger alike and a heart laden with gold. He met and married
local woman Margaret Mc Nally (nee Moran). Following his retirement from ESB
and Margaret’s sale of the Lough Ree Arms they moved to Mullingar where they
lived until his untimely death.  The
Rathcline club was heavily represented at his removal from Gilsenan’s Funeral
Home on Sunday where they carried his coffin draped in the club colours and the
number 12 jersey he wore with such distinction from the Funeral Home to the
Cathedral of Christ the King.

His Funeral Mass took place on
Monday and his remains were then interred in his native Mucklagh, Tullamore. We
offer our sincere sympathy to Margaret, daughter Olivia, brother, sisters,
relatives and many friends.

Death

The entire community were saddened
to learn of the death at her residence on Tuesday last 14th June on
the Green of Mrs Margaret Monaghan. Lily as she was more commonly known was
predeceased a number of years ago by her husband Jamsie. Lily had been in
failing health but her death came suddenly and peacefully in the company of her
son Sean. Lily was a staunchly proud native of County Monaghan. She was a woman
that was warm and welcoming and a great neighbour and friend. She never left
anyone in need unaided and her generosity of spirit will long remain in the
memory. She was a lady that always inspired positivity. Lily was once of the
oldest lady residents of the town and her passing will leave a great void in
the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to know her.  The attendance at the removal of her remains
from her residence to St. Mary’s Church on Thursday and again at her Funeral
mass and burial in Clonbonny was both large and representative. To her son
Sean, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Lough Ree AC

Again Sligo was the venue
for the Connaught Athletic Championships on Saturday last. This time it was for
the older age groups. The club had only 5 athletes in action but netted four
medals for their troubles. The odd man out, in every sense of the word, was
Owen Murray. Apart from being the only male in the group, he was, unfortunately,
the only one not to get into the medals. Owen was competition in the U13 Shot,
where he finished in a very creditable 5th place, having thrown a personal best
in the process.

In the U14 Shot, Anna
Peters was unlucky to have some ‘heavy hitters’ in her age group.  We are sure she was delighted to come away
with a bronze medal.

The Girls U13 Shot saw
club mates Orla Duffy and Larissa Noone in action. Both girls are of similar
standard. Orla was in contention for a medal after her first throw, while
Larissa was not. However, Larissa got her act together and got into the bronze medal
with her last throw, finishing only 2 centimetres behind Orla, who had taken
the silver medal. It was quite an achievement for the girls to take two out of
the three medals on offer.

Pride of place must go to
Enda Berger. The Latvian lass waited patiently at the throwing area from 1pm.
At some stage the commenced the U16 javelin event, leaving it unfinished but
with Enda in the lead after three throws. The officials were waiting for some
girls that were in the 200m heats and finals. It was 4.30 pm when the competition
finished and Enda was Connaught Champion. She mentioned she was proud of
herself and so well she might be. She needed plenty of patience and natural
ability to succeed on the day.

Yes! they were all happy
travellers on the way home.
