Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
All roads to Ballintubber
Saturday
next is the most important games, so far, this year for St. Faithleach’s senior
team when they travel to Ballintubber for their final group game of the senior
championship. The team have hit a rich vein of form in the past few weeks and
we hope that they will maintain this form and progress to the next round of the
championship. The team needs your support to cheer them on to victory and the
throw in is 7pm.

This
is ample notice for all those with relatives in each of the cemeteries to have
their family grave tended to and have it in good shape.

Ballyleague Tidy Towns
Fresh paint was the order of the week for the
residents of Ballyleague and surrounding areas as the community responded in
terrific spirit to the recent request for a lick of paint to be applied to
walls and homes ahead of the visit of the judges in the National Tidy Towns
competition. Over the last seven days fresh paint has been applied in huge
volumes to walls and buildings all the way through the village from Ray’s
Filling Station to the River Shannon bridge and the result is fantastic to see.
The Ballyleague Village renewal and tidy towns committee wish to sincerely
thank all those who brought out the paint brushes this week and made such a
difference. Your help has really made a difference. The addition of bright and colourful
new flower baskets to the old Anchor hotel and other homes in the area is
another bonus. The spirit shown by the community is a credit to everybody and
the village looks superb now.
New Planters
enhance town
The new planters containing Trees and flowers were
introduced to the town last week and add a great decoration to our town. The
planters are sponsored by Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op in conjunction with Longford
Community Resources Ltd. They have drawn much comment since their arrival and
it is a great enhancement of our town. The planters were excellently made by
local fabricator Vinnie Mc Gowan and the planting of the trees and flowers were
all done by local volunteers keen on the enrichment of the town. There is a
great responsibility on everybody to ensure that no damage is done to these
planters and that we all keep a watchful eye to ensure no damage is done.
The
efforts to enhance our town are on-going and anything you can do in support of
the efforts will be appreciated.

Slashers and Cashel on Friday night last. The game finished with a convincing
win for Longford Slashers 1-19 to 4 points. It was great to see Clonbonny

The
Connaught championships for U9 to U12 took pride of place at the tartan track
at Sligo I.T. on Saturday last.
The
club was well represented with about thirty young athletes. There were plenty
of youngsters there ensuring a high standard of competition. Three Connaught
medals was the limit of the clubs achievement – with several fourth places
giving hope for future events. To live with the larger clubs namely Galway City
Harriers, Castlebar and Sligo the club needs their best athletes on the day or
more correctly their team-mates need them.
The
club hero – James Browne came to notice for the first time at the Primary
Schools Sports Day organised by the club at Easter. He was entered in the U11
Ball Throw event and teamed up with Bryn Peters. Had Peters thrown to his potential
they would have won the event, instead they had to settle for bronze medals.
That is not taking from the fact that James had the best throw in the
competition.
Dean
O’Reilly came to the club by the same route and finished fourth in the U12 Ball
Throw, an individual event in this age group. His placing qualifies him for the
All Ireland Finals in Templemore. While disappointed with the number of fourth
places the club was pleased with the performances of several of the youngsters.
In the longer races Seadhna Ryan, Sarah Hoare and the Costello sisters come to
mind, despite the fact that the club is not giving enough attention to middle
distant events. One could also add relays to that statement – events where
practice pays dividends. Community Games teams take note! It was great to see the “Cashel Twins” Ciara Healy
and Ann Bannon back in action.
Last
but not least, congratulations to Rebecca Berga who won the silver medal in the
under 12 Ball Throw. Indeed Rebecca maintains that she had the winning throw
but got disqualified for a break.
The
club is looking forward to the Connaught Championships on Saturday next for the
older groups.
