Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Huge recognition for Rathcline GAA
The
major development work being done at the Rathcline GAA gained fantastic
recognition last week from Longford County Board. With the club house completed
and the new all-weather pitch only recently getting the go ahead to play on the
county board acknowledged the tremendous work being done by the club when they
awarded the opening game of this year’s championship to the Rathcline club on
Friday evening 10th June at 8pm.
It
is a wonderful honour and more especially when the game involves Longford
Slashers who will open their defence of their championship crown when they take
on our neighbours Cashel.
Everybody
in the parish that has time available to them should offer whatever help they
can give to help the club prepare the club grounds and surrounds for this
historic occasion. We must show that we have the capability to host such a high
profile game to the highest standard and show the pride we have in our club and
our parish. We have one moth to get it right for the night so let’s get
going. Please contact Chairman Liam
Connerton, Secretary Cathal Chapman or any club member to offer your
assistance.
Community College Celebrations
As
you know Lanesboro Community College will celebrate 50 years of education on
Saturday 4th June. A large number of past pupils from far and wide
have expressed their interest in attending the celebrations. Two classes will
be especially honoured 1960 and also the year of the amalgamation with the
Convent of Mercy. A religious ceremony will be held in St. Mary’s Church at 3pm
followed by a function at the school afterwards. A wonderful evening of
nostalgia is in prospect.
There
have been several enquiries about accommodation in and around the town. It
would be greatly appreciated if people who had accommodation of any kind would
contact the college 043-33 21139 during school hours and give details. These
will then be passed on to those interested.
Pig on Spit raises €300
The
‘pig on the spit’ organised by local butcher Terry Mc Loughlin outside his
premises on Main Street on St. Patrick’s Day raised the sum of €300 for
Lanesboro Social Services. The Social Services committee would like to extend
their deep gratitude to Terry and to everybody that supported on the day.
The
Social Services committee continues to do fantastic unseen and unheralded work
in or community and if you can in any way possible give a donation to any of
the committee members or leave envelope with your donation into O’Brien’s Shop
where it will be passed on immediately.
Community College Night at the Dogs
On
Friday night next 20th May Lanesboro Community College will host a
‘Night at the Dogs’ at Longford Greyhound track. The first race is timed for
8pm and it will kick off a night of fun and sport and a night not to be missed.
Admission is only €10 for a great night and tickets are on sale locally. Previous
fundraising events held for local schools and clubs in Longford Greyhound
Stadium have proved themselves very enjoyable nights and we hope that as many
people as possible attend as it promises to be a great night for all students,
parents, teachers and locals who attend.

Work Scheme Up and Running
The
work scheme introduced last year by the Shannon Gaels club where members of the
club will come and do the work you may have be it in your house or indeed
outside your house such as general clean up, mowing grass, footing turf on the
bog or helping out at farm work. Last year was the first year this scheme was introduced
and members of the Shannon Gaels club, both male and female, made themselves
available for work and the scheme proved to be a wonderful success. The club
are again offering these services and if you are interested in availing of this
scheme you should contact, Sean Kenny, Jimmy Flood, Joe O’Brien, Seadna Ryan or
Brendan Keane.
Help required at Rathcline Cemetery
In
preparation for the upcoming cemetery Sunday, 3rd July, there is a
lot of work to be done in and around Rathcline cemetery especially with the
taking down of ivy that has taken hold on the walls and many other jobs. Any
evening after 6pm Johnny Hanley will welcome anyone and everyone to assist with
this work.
Cemetery Sundays
The
dates have now been set for Mass to be celebrated at the three cemeteries in
the parish of Rathcline in July. Mass on
Sunday 3rd July Rathcline Cemetery at 6pm. Lanesboro Cemetery on 10th
July at 6pm and Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th July also at 6pm.
This
is ample notice for all those with relatives in each of the cemeteries to have
their family grave tended to and have it in good shape.
St. Faithleach’s fall short
Before
a big crowd in their club grounds in Ballyleague the St. Faithleach’s senior
team fell just short in their first round championship game against Kilmore on
Saturday evening last. Turning over just 2 points down after playing against
the wind at half time the Gods seemed to be favouring the St. Faithleach’s
lads. However Kilmore put up a more stubborn second half performance and held out
for a one point victory.
The
lads have a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday next in Tarmonbarry when in
the second round of their group they will play Elphin.
We
wish the lads the very best of luck and look forward to their championship aspirations
to be firmly back on-track by the end of the game.

Ballyboro
U7:
Congratulations & well done to all our U7 players along with their
Manager/Mentor, Ian Baker who took part in the U7 Fun League in Abbeycartron on
Friday last.
U13:
Ballyboro V Camlin Utd. Final Score 2-4.
Our
U13 Team bowed out of the Shane Brennan Cup on Saturday last where they were
defeated by Camlin United in the Semi-Final. A great game of football from both
sides with Boro taking the lead 10 min in; a quickly taken free kick by Kevin
Sorohan who lifted the ball over the Camlin defence, finding Shane Phillips who
volleyed into the top-corner. Camlin equalised into injury-time, leaving the
sides level at the break. Camlin went 3-1 up within minutes of the 2nd half
& Boro fought on, giving it their all. Camlin secured another before Steven
Walsh scored a cracking goal for Boro to finish the game 4-2. Well done to all
players on the Under 13 Panel, along with their Manager/Mentor, Tom Gill, for a
great season of football. Panel: E. Farrell, R. Guinan, D. Barry, J. Irwin, M.
Zimarevs, M. Cox, S. Walsh, K. Sorohan, S. Phillips, C. English, C. Gannon, J.

For
the first time ever Clonbonny is set to hold 1st round games in the
Senior Championship. The first match of the championship will take place in
Clonbonny between Longford Slashers and Cashel on Friday 10th June
at 8pm. There will be a lot of preparation work to be done leading up to this
match so all help would be greatly appreciated.

of luck to the Longford senior team who take on Laois in Portlaoise this Sunday
May 22nd at 2pm in the Leinster Senior Championship.
Lough Ree AC
WOW!
It is the only way of describing the primary School’s Annual Sports Day
organised by Lough Ree AC. This event started three years ago for the schools
in the Lanesboro Ballyleague areas with the intention of introducing youngsters
to events they might not otherwise participate in. Everybody knows from an
early age those that can run fast but there are other disciplines such as
jumping and throwing with their variations that our youth have not tried.
In
the past, some of the local schools did not take part and when Stonepark and
Gael-Scoil asked to be included, the club was delighted to have them. This year
ten schools were involved, this had its advantages and disadvantages.
It
was great to see the increase in numbers, but it brought some hiccups. There
were 50 competitors in the Ball-Throw for 5th/6th class
boys, and Margaret Mullooly was at the
pin of her collar to cope with 70 in the 5th/6th
class Long Jump – just one of four Long
Jump competitions. Maybe the club should submit this achievement to the
Guinness Book of Records?
With
over 300 children on a high from being out of class and most not aware of the
procedure, it is not surprising that some may have missed some events. There
were as many as eight heats in some of the sprint races. In an effort to speed
up matters there were two sets of officials looking after the Ball Throw. In
the confusion the 3rd/4th class girls had two
competitions had two competitions judged differently. When you have over 30
entrants one assumes you have everybody but this was not the case. Yes, there
were hiccups and the club hopes to get feedback from teachers as to how best
the day can be improved.
It
was pleasing to see Whitehall and Ballagh schools attend for the first time and
they also featured in the medals.
To
add to the difficulties everybody had to survive showers of rain which again
raises the question of a stand/shelter on the Ballymahon side of the track. The
club spent the month of April trying to fix a suitable date avoiding holidays,
football fixtures, blitzes, leagues etc.
Finally,
a word of appreciation to the adults and students from the Community College
who officiated and recorded on the day and also to the Community College for
making their facilities available to the club.
