Lanesboro
Ballyleague Notes
Success is Sweet
A long threatening has finally come to pass and it is always the sweeter when
success is gained on your home ground. Longford Rugby club finally gained the promotion
that agonisingly eluded them over the past numbers of years. The club worked
hard and it is great that they have finally reached their holy grail. What
makes the success for a local point of view is the input of local lads in this
great victory. Damian Curley, Strokestown Road, is coach of the successful side
while Fran Deffew and Gareth Johnston, both Rathcline Road, played huge parts
in this tremendous success on the field.
We congratulate the lads on their wonderful input into this success and
wish them every success as they go forward in the coming season.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Barbara and John Ferguson and
family, Knock, on the death last week of Barbara’s sister, Mrs Marie Lappin, in
England.

entrants and their parents for September 2011 are invited to come along.
CBS Celebrates
Over many decades students left the Lanesboro Ballyleague area for their secondary
schooling at Roscommon CBS. Last Saturday afternoon in Cusack Park Mullingar
the young players representing the school claimed the All-Ireland B
championship after a titanic struggle over Coláiste Mhuire, Clane. On the team
was Enda Lannon, Ballagh, son of Anthony and Mary Lannon and coming on to play
a vital role was the community’s other representative David Rooney, son of
Gerry and Emily Rooney, Ballyleague. We congratulate the entire panel and their
team mentors on their outstanding achievement and also for raising the spirits
of all of us that attended the school down through the years.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Anna Egan and family, Ballyleague
on the sudden death last weekend of her brother Gerry Coady, Ballinascarthy,
Co. Cork.
Fermoyle N.S. Enrolment
Enrolment for new pupils will be held in Fermoyle N.S on Monday 11th April from 2pm – 3pm.
Deepest
Sympathy
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we extend our deepest sympathy to Ann Farrell, Lehery, on the tragic death of her sister Deirdre Mc Carthy, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare last week.
Golden
Anniversary Celebration
Lanesboro Community College is celebrating its Golden Jubilee
A celebration to mark this occasion will be held on Saturday 4th June 2011.
The School Principal, Jimmy Flanagan, and the organising committee would like to
invite all past pupils and their families to come and celebrate with us. They hope to contact as many of our past pupils as possible and they would really appreciate any help you can give in the reaching of this goal. It will be a wonderful opportunity to come back and visit your old school and to meet up
with old friends. The committee is particularly keen to make contact with all
students who were on that first roll book 50 years ago. Because the Vocational school
amalgamated with the Convent of Mercy 21 years ago, forming the Community
College, they are hoping that the students who were with them in 1989 will also
be here in force! Further details will be included over the next few weeks.
Presently the organising committee are trying to locate photographs of life in the school
over the last 50 years. If you have any please drop them into the school. Put
your name and address on the envelope containing the pictures and the school
will return them to you once they have taken copies. If you have any queries/suggestions, please contact the school at 043 33 21139.
Illegal Dumping
The scourge of the country at the moment is the tremendous amount of illegal dumping. While we may see it on lay-bys, on side roads and in side streets it is highly unusual to hear of it happening with cars driving into local estates and dumping their rubbish both day and night. Recently, the quite cul de sac of
the small estate beside the Community College, Radharc na Muileann, has been blighted by such horrendous deeds. Only the other night one of the residents came upon a man discarding his rubbish and assisted him in returning the rubbish to his car before he drove away. The resident of this quite estate are truly fed up of the actions of the mindless and notice is now being taken of the vehicle traffic into and out of this estate. We hope that anybody seen dumping rubbish will be reported to the proper authorities where action will be
taken.

Ballyleague
Village Renewal
After picking up more than twenty additional points in last year’s National Tidy Town
the Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy towns committee will have their state
of the art new mower at their disposal for the full season and it is hoped to
cut the grass on all approach roads from Strokestown and Roscommon. The group
has also targetted work on a new kerbed area alongside the stone wall and the
roadway opposite the national school in Ballyleague for a major programme of
work. “We hope to get as much support from the people of the community as
possible to prepare this new area for flowers, shrubs and grass again”
Denis Dunne says, “we will need manpower and woman power to get the job
done and we are appealing now for volunteers to come forward for the first clean
-up day which is on Saturday next April 9th at 10am. It is hoped to have a
clean up every Saturday at 10am and every Wednesday at 6-30pm during April. All
volunteers are asked to meet at the old Sliabh Ban Hotel at 10 am on Saturday
next and it is hoped to provide gloves and bags for the litter.
Anybody with earth-moving equipment available would be especially welcome to assist
with the work on the kerb way along the roadside between the Sliabh ban hotel
and the Church of the Holy Rosary,
The Village Renewal & Tidy Town’s committee has appealed to residents to come
out and clean up the public areas alongside their own private residences during
the Spring clean in April and throughout the Summer.
A lick of paint and a general clean-up of walls and hedges would be very welcome
and help to build on the great work that was carried out last year.
The Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns committee only recently carried out
some fantastic hedge-cutting work on the Roscommon road and a special committee
is also looking at the future enhancement of the area where St. Faithleach’s
well is located on the Roscommon Road.
A landscaping plan for the village is also to be carried out in the coming weeks
by a professional consultant and new shrubs, trees and flowers will then be
planted in areas that have been chosen for enhancement.
“We would like to thank all those who are helping us in a voluntary capacity”
Chairman Denis Dunne says, “but in 2011 we need more manpower and
womanpower to help carry out the physical work and we are appealing to lots
of new faces to turn up on Saturday April 9th at 10am for the first
clean-up session of the New Year. Remember the village belongs to all of us and
how it looks reflects on all of us when visitors pass through.”
If you would like to help clean-up Ballyleague in the coming weeks or make a
private contribution to the workload please contact Denis at 0433321150 or e mail the committee: keepballyleaguetidy@gmail.com

available and collection is on-going. For more information on collection depot
or collection arrangements please contact any of the following players: Kevin
