St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Time is closing in on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade that will take place in Ballyleague/Lanesboro on Thursday 17th March commencing at 2.30pm. All intending to enter floats if they have barbeque not already registered could they do so immediately?
It is hoped that this year will be the best by far and this can only happen with your efforts and full support. We look forward to bumper crowds lining the street to another great day of celebration in Lanesboro and Ballyleague.
Barbequed Pig
Last year one of the highlights of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was the barbequed pig by local butcher Terry Mc Loughlin. This year Terry will once again barbeque a pig and the proceeds will be donated to Lanesboro Social Services. You are encouraged to support this very worthwhile cause.
Back by Popular Demand
Newtowncashel Drama Groups production of Canaries by Bernard J Farrell will be staged again in “The Hill” on Friday 11th March due to popular demand.
Doors open at 8.00pm. Curtain 8.30pm sharp. Admission is strictly by ticket only. Adults €10 and Primary Children €5. Tickets are available from Kevin Casey at 086 8436651. The play contains adult humour which may not be suitable for children.
Walking & Holiday Club
A new venture ‘Chris’s Walking and Holiday Club’ was recently formed and is attracting walkers from Lanesboro, Ballyleague, Ballymahon, Strokestown and Roscommon.
The first outing was a 10k canal walk along the recently opened canal from Killashee to Clondra. It is hoped that a healthy mix of male and female walkers will be interested in joining this healthy lifestyle. It’s a great way to lose weight, get fit and make new friends. The walks will be planned over distances between 8k and 16k and will vary from Canal Walks to Forest walks and various sections of the Suck Valley Way. As the club grows it is hoped to get a medium sized group together and organise a walking weekend away or a foreign walking holiday. As the walks are finalised all walkers will be notified of the upcoming weekend walks. Fair Day Success
The tradition Fair Day took place in Lanesboro on Saturday last with a huge turnout of horses, buyers and onlookers. The Lord smiled down on the occasion and blessed us with a lovely day which enticed record numbers to Lanesboro for the day. It was estimated that there were over 400 horses which is a record number of horses and ponies for sale.
Breaking with tradition the horses and ponies were located in the ‘priest’s field’ behind the church and it was filled to capacity. The stall holders, where brisk business was done all day, were placed along the Longford Road.
As this was the first time for the ‘fair’ to be taken off the street it caused some teething problems despite the best efforts of the committee. Going forward the committee are seeking that all concerned bodies affected and buoyed by the fair come together to discuss their positives and negatives and to ensure a bigger, better and smoother day for all concerned.
The committee will be calling a meeting and it is expected the residents and businesses of Main Street, residents of Longford Road, Curraghrua, Church View, Knock and the Green along with the local Gardaí and county council, the stewards and anybody that played a part no matter how small.
The Fair Day is a living part us and also of the year in Lanesboro and it is essential that it continues to be nurtured and stepped forward to bigger and brighter days ahead for all in Lanesboro and the general area.
Bereavement Course
A course of six week duration will be held in the Family Centre, Longford, beginning this Wednesday 9th March at 8pm. Further details, phone 3346827 or 087-2843034.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
Club President Maura Hanley’s competition was held over two nights 16th and 23rd February. The winner of the President prize was Gemma Douglas with Mae Casey taking second prize. Third prize was a tie between Phil Chalmers and Tom Feeney. The first session was won by Una Lawlor and the second session by Renee Walsh.
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 2nd March are; N/S 1st Mary mc Gushin & Marie Sheeran, 2nd Phil Chalmers & Cyril Hussey. E/W 1st Kathleen Hanley & Una Clarke, 2nd Frank and Frances Brennan.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Donal O’Grady and family, Ballyleague, on the death last week of Donal’s stepmother, Bridget O’Grady, Tubber, Co. Clare.
25 Card Game in Peer Inn
The results of the weekly 25 card game in the Peer Inn on Sunday night last were 1st Joe & Edmund, 2nd Tom & Mickie, Table prizes went to Johno & Brendan and Padraig and Ger.
The game continues on this Sunday night with the first game starting at 9pm.
Community Games
Lanesborough’s under 13 indoor soccer team faced Enfield, Co Meath in the Leinster qualifications in Keenagh on Thursday. At the end of normal time, the game was a draw at 2-2. In the second half of extra time, Enfield got a goal to win the tie and progress. The Lanesboro team were Jordan Donlon (1), Iarla O’Sullivan (1), Phillip Chalmers, Connell Kennelly, Padraig Sorohan and Niall Keane with Cillian Flood having a staring performance in goal. Well done to the team for reaching this stage of the completion and playing so well for all the Lanesboro support. Thank you to Robbie Chambers for managing the team and also the parents who helped with catering for the occasion.
On Friday night the U-14 Lanesboro Quiz team was selected through a local Quiz. The final team will be made up of Aaron Farrell, Niall Keane, Kevin Sorohan, Cillian Flood, Conor English, and Ashling Casey. Well done also the younger kids that took part in the quiz the future looks very bright. Thanks to Brigid Mullooly who did a great job as quizmaster. The Community Games County Quiz will take place in The Park House Hotel, Edgeworthstown on Monday the 7th March, starting at 7pm.
In the Art competition results are as follows: Girls: U-14 1st Tanya Farrell, 2nd Anna Peters, and 3rd Sarah Farrell. U-12 1st Blessing Salami, 2nd Aishling Casey, 3rd Sorcha Hanlon. U-10 1st Grainne Chalk, 2nd Dami Salami, 3rd Elizabeth Clyne. U-8 1st Vikki Kajanova, 2nd Viktoria Jedrych, 3rd Holly Wise. Boy’s: U-14 1st Stephen O’Dowd; 2nd James Gavigan, 3rd Conor English. U-12 1st Jakub Kajan, 2nd Oran Wise, 3rd Sean Maguire.U-10 1st Michal Kajan, 2nd Séadhna Ryan, 3rd Brían Casey U-8 1st Duileach Ryan 2nd Cormac Casey. The standard of Art work was very high. Thank you to the schools for facilitating the entries and to Denis Devereaux for judging the competition. The winning pictures will be put up in the Library. The winners of each category will represent Lanesboro at the County Competition in Keenagh Hall at 10:30 on Sat 12th March. We expect the Handwriting competition to be held at this time also but that has to be confirmed.

Lenten Scripture Group
You are invited to go along to the Scripture Study Group who will meet every Wednesday night from 8pm to 9pm in the Convent Meeting Room. The Lenten theme is ‘Discover God’s Word for you this Lent’. The Scripture Study Group is eminently suitable for those that read at Mass especially when their turn comes around.
Ballyboro
U-11 Ballyboro 1 – 0 Kenagh
Interesting game this one in which Jack Magan and Pauric Halpin were full of running for Boro in midfield and Pauric Sorohan and Niall Casey were rock solid in defence. Kenagh matched this work-rate and as a result both sides cancelled each other out right up to half-time. Just before the break the game burst into life when both Magan and Philip Chalmers were denied by great saves from the Kenagh keeper. Kenagh then produced a clear cut chance which sailed just wide. Boro were transformed in the second-half with Jordan Donlon sending four shots in a row whizzing past the posts. Chalmers then sent a superb header just over and just when it seemed that Kenagh had survived; Chalmers calmly slotted home a rebound from a Pauric Sorohan effort in the final minutes. Michael O Donnell had his best game to date with some excellent decision making in the first half.
U-8 Ballyboro 4 – 0 Gaels Utd
This game played a week ago saw Ballyboro in full flight driven on by Brian Casey and Evan Chalmers who supplied the ammo for Sean Kenny and John Phelim Reilly to score two excellent goals. Gaels although rattled came back strongly and only assured goalkeeping by Jack Tucker and defending by Mark Silva kept Boro ahead at half time. John Mc Loughlin provided the running in the second half and fine goals from Mark Dowd and Ultan Sullivan saw Boro home comfortably at the finish.
Ballyboro Girls 4 – 0 Delvin
Not to be outdone by the boys, Ballyboro had their best performance to date with Hannah Shea and Niamh Scally outstanding in the opening half with the lethal Ellen Irwin topping it off with a clinical brace. The second half was much the same this time Marie Kelly firing in a clinical brace after fine work from Aisling Mc Loughlin and Áine Halpin with Niamh Chawke and Katie Browne also showing excellent form.
It has been pointed out that the starting games on the home pitch are not kicking-off on time, which in turn is causing a backlog as the day goes on. This is unacceptable particularly as we the home team are responsible for this. So please ensure that 11 o’clock kick-off is adhered to.
St Patrick’s Day Parade is upon us again and respecting the fact that so many of our members are tied up with schools and different clubs etc. there is a general consensus that maybe we should leave it out of our calendar for this year. On the other hand we have a group of 25 available so far to walk, a trailer available to decorate and the only thing missing is something to put on it. So we’ll take a final vote on Friday, remember it’s good to keep the parade alive. Any Managers interested in helping out please let us know.

Rathcline GAA
The Players Fundraising Committee is embarking on a fundraising campaign over the next couple of weeks. The first event is Spring Clean – Scrap Metal Collection. This will take place every Saturday from March 12th until April 2nd. This gives a chance for people to donate any unwanted scrap metal which they may have lying around. For more information on collection depot or collection arrangements please contact any of the following players: Kevin Hanley, Alan Fayne, Ryan Fallon, Michael Hanley, Conor Casey and James Hanley.
Congratulations to the Intermediate League Team who had a comprehensive away win to Carrickedmond on Sunday afternoon with a final score of 3-13 to 2-09. The team are looking to retain the title which they won last year. The team are out again in Round 2 of Reserve League 2 against Cashel on this Sunday coming 13th March at 2pm in Clonbonny. This will be the first competitive home fixture on the new All Weather Pitch in Clonbonny.
The club would like to remind everyone that membership is now due. Players’ membership of €50 must be paid immediately to Brendan Rhatigan. Given that matches have already started in the club at both senior and minor level, it is vital that membership is paid so as to be covered by the players’ insurance injury scheme. Membership of €20 for non-playing members should be paid to Denis Crinigan, Peter Skelly or to any member of the executive. The annual County Board Punchestown racing festival is scheduled to take place May 4th this year. Once again it is Rathcline’s intention to fill as many tables as possible for the club. Anyone who is interested can make early contributions to Liam Connerton so as to avoid the last minute rush for tickets in the coming months.
Lough Ree 25 Card Drive
The results of the competition held on Sunday night last 6th March in Lough Ree Development Co-Op. First prize with 12 games went to Mary & Liz; table prize went to Pat Joe & Michael Kelly. The raffle winners were Gerry Ryan, Pat Newman, Tom Donlon and Mary Farrell.
The jackpot was won on Sunday 27th February by Michael Finan and Michael Rogers with 15 games. The jackpot next Sunday stands at €110 on 14 games.
