Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Ardagh is the Place to Be on Sunday

The Scór na nÓg semifinals held in the Parish Hall on Saturday night last was a resounding success for the Shannon Gaels club both in its organization and the quality of the clubs five entrants in the competition.  Two of our groups qualified for the County Final in Ardagh on Sunday afternoon next at 3pm, they are the ‘sketch group’ consisting of Lauren Guinan, Anna Peters, Laura Peters, Dearbhail Flood, Niall Keane, Stephen Tobin and Shane Kenny and the Ballad Group of Tara Leigh Lulham, Megan Daly, Melissa Gilmore, Catherine Mullooly and Cillian Flood. It was a really tremendous achievement for the club to have two county finalists and the club were equally proud of the performances of Megan Daly’s performance in the Solo Singing, Óisín O’Sullivan in the Storytelling/Recitation and the Question Time team of Jack Rooney, Eoin Sorohan and Andrew Ward all of whom were very unlucky not to have joined their club mates in the county final.

The preparatory work and dedication to Scór na nÓg put in by the mother and daughter team of Maura and Tracy Tobin truly deserves mention and also the success of Saturday night last. The club pays a special tribute to them for all their utter dedication to Scór in the parish of Rathcline.

The club made a special presentation of a bouquet of flowers to Irish and Cultural Officer of Longford Co. Board on the occasion of it being her last visit to the club before her time of office comes to an end at the upcoming Longford GAA county convention. Margaret during her time in office has been of great assistance to the Shannon Gaels club as we endeavored to develop Scór in the club and parish.

We cannot let the occasion pass with acknowledging the preparation of the hall and stage by the local FÁS group under their supervisor John L Farrell. We also would like to thank everybody that helped in every way to making the night a tremendous success.

The club would like to encourage as many club members as possible to travel to Ardagh on Sunday to support our Shannon Gaels representatives and hopefully see them progress to the Leinster semifinals.

Death

The unexpected death took place at Longford Westmeath General Hospital, Mullingar on Saturday 13th November of Eamon Fallon, Knock. Eamon was from one of the oldest and most respected families in our parish had been in hospital for three weeks. He was a man who had a tremendous interest in all things Rathcline and Lanesboro. He had a natural ability that could turn his hand to practically anything. For us youngsters Eamon was the original Mc Gyver, no matter what need fixing and how bad it was he was a man that that could always adapt. He was a master hand in times past at the rearing and training greyhounds. Eamon was legendary at all the local greyhound tracks for his many winners. A noted footballer with the Rathcline club during his playing days, his passing leaves an emptiness in many a chair, in many a house that he rambled. He will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him. His remains were removed from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Sunday to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro and following his unreal Mass on Monday his remains were interred in Rathcline cemetery.

To his step son Jeaffrey Mc Gann and step daughter Colette Wyse, brothers Jim and John Anthony, sisters Veronica Manning, Kathleen Casserly and Phil Chalmers, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

How is your training coming along?

I presume you are all now in serious training for the annual Christmas Day Run/Walk in aid of Multiple Sclerosis. As you know the run/walk takes place between Newtowncashel and Lanesboro with the walkers setting off at 11.45am and the runners at 12.15pm.

This is the 20th anniversary and it would be marvelous to have a record number taking part. With almost 6 weeks to go to Christmas Day, time is running out to get training and support the very special occasion. As we are in very trying times financially everybody is asked to make that extra special effort as this is the main fund raiser for the MS society and your sponsorship means that there is a continuous support for those suffering with MS.

Goal scorers for Boro were Shane Kenny (3), Eugene Maguire (2) & Sean Costello (1). Ballyboro V Ballymahon – Final Score 1-0. Goal scorer for Boro was Óisín O’Sullivan.

U9: Ballyboro Lions V Delvin Falcons. Final Score 2-1.

Boro came out on top in this top of the table clash on Sunday last. This was an excellent game of football by both sides & Boro won courtesy of two 1st half goals from Liam Ormsby. This was a real end-to-end game & both sides had their spells of dominance. Dylan Donlon was outstanding for Boro while back-line of Nathan McGovern & Michael Dunne were excellent. James Browne, Cian O’Brien & P. J. Connaughton ran themselves into the ground in the middle of the field while up-front Liam Ormsby & Sean Horgan were always a handful. Delvin got a late goal but Boro hung on to continue their unbeaten run. Well done to all players.
