Lough Ree AC
On Thursday evening, Athlone IT was the venue for the County Athletic finals for the under 13 to under 17 age groups. This event was rather low key, but that is no surprise as the notice was short and the evening fixture does not suit everybody. The club was embarrassed returning youngsters home in the dark, with all having school the following day. We hope that those that made that decision will have learned from it.
It was not all negative; it turned out to be an enjoyable evening for those that participated. The club had some ‘Cloontagh cailíns’ travelling for the first time – a product of the Primary schools sportsday. Indeed Lisa Nolan was one of the stars of the day. The Derryadd lass ran the 1500m under 14; a distance she had never ran before, won, and followed that up by finishing 2nd in the 400m. Orla Duffy came as a guest, was entered in the shot putt competition in error and had the best throw. Larissa Noone take note! Owen Murray also guested in the long jump and should give a good account of himself on Saturday next in his own age group.
The following are county champions for 2010 – Under 13 age group Tanya Farrell Long jump, Cian Donohue Long jump, Alana Dolan Shot, Hayley Rooney 200m. Under 14 : Lisa Nolan 1500m, Kellie Murphy 400m, Eleanor Lisle Shot, Dearbháil Flood 1000 walk, Rachael Costello 400m, Kevin Sorohan 100m and 200m. Under 15: Enda Berga Shot & Javelin, Laura Peters 100m & 200m.
Runner –Up were; under 13 Sarah Farrell Long jump and Shot, Hayley Rooney 400m, Rachael Costello 100m & 200m. Under 14 Kellie Murphy Javelin, Lisa Murphy 400m. Under 15 Enda Berga 100m. Bronze medal winners; under 13 Cian Donohue 400m & 800m. Tanya Farrell 200m, Anna Peters Shot & Long jump. Under 14; Dearbháil Flood Shot. Under 15 Eleanor Lisle 100m.
Boys were scarce but that is nothing new, it was their loss. Congratulations to all who took part in the Rathcline Community Games earlier in the week. Again the Under 16’s were thin on the ground it makes you wonder if our youth are getting old before their time in all sports?
We look forward to the Roscommon county championships on Saturday next for the under 9 to under 12 age groups and the competitions take place at Lanesboro track. This is a team competition with only 3 teams per county allowed to take part in each competition.
The Sunday walk from Clonbonny GAA pitch continues at 12.30pm every week. All are welcome.
Death
The entire area was saddened to learn of the sad passing of one of our most popular residents at Roscommon County Hospital on Saturday last 15th May. Mena Feeney, Knock was predeceased by her husband Tom and daughter Philomena was a lady of wonderful disposition. She was truly a lady with impeccable qualities and her cheery and hearty welcome betrayed the affection that was her and her way of life. Mena was a lady with a great singing voice and was a member of the Active Age choir. She was a daily communicant and a leading member of the Active Age group since its inception. Mena was an excellent and caring neighbour. Her remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Sunday last until the removal of her remains to St. Mary’s Church and burial took place to Clonbonny cemetery follow Requiem Mass on Monday. To her sons Tom and Fergie, daughter Gabrielle, sister Kathleen, brother Frank relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Shannon Gaels
The teams involved in league competitions are competing with tremendous distinction and it is a great credit to the players and team management. We would love to see more parents turning out to support their sons and the teams. The support of parents has a tremendous affect on the players especially the older age groups. The under 14 teams are involved every Tuesday evening commencing this Tuesday v Southern Gaels in Clonbonny at 8pm and again on Tuesday week in Edgeworthstown against Wolfe Tones at 8pm. The under 16 team play every Thursday and this Thursday they play St. Francis in Clonbonny at 7.30pm.
Training continues apace with for under 6 to under 14 in Clonbonny on Thursday evening.
Kellogg’s challenge – We have to collect 500 tokens from Kellogg’s Cornflakes, Crunchy Nut and Crunch Nut Feast boxes and ask you help the club reach this goal. You can leave your collection into O’Brien’s shop for collection by the club.
Referee – Have you ever thought of becoming a referee? The club hopes to run a referee course – number dependant – in the very near future. This course is for those interested in becoming a referee to initially do under age blitz matches for the club. It is also a wonderful way of getting the full and up to date information on the new rules. We hope for a large number from the club and if you are interested please contact Jimmy Flood, Seadna Ryan, Sean Kenny, Brendan Keane or Joe O’Brien immediately. This course is also open to ladies and all must be 16 years or over.
Sympathy – The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Ronan Mc Cormack who died so tragically last week. The club would also like to extend its sincere sympathy to the Watts family on the death of Mrs Eileen watts sister Maria Murphy in Cork last week.
