Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 29th March’10

Lanesboro – Ballyleague Notes

Lough Ree AC

It was a busy few days, with two sessions of training on Tuesday evening in Ballyleague Hall, an AGM on Wednesday and two qualifiers for the National Athletic Indoor Championships in Nenagh over the weekend. As luck would have it both girls were competing on seperate day making in more awkward.

Larissa Noone was first into action on Saturday in the under 12 shot, her first All Ireland competition. It was an eventful day for the young Ballyleague athlete; her transport broke down in Borrisokane and herself and Margaret Mullooly had to complete the journey by taxi, which they were lucky to get. Larissa ‘broke’ on her first two throws (nerves), but her third throw was ¾metre better than the one that won her silver in the Connaught Championship. One cannot ask for better for a girl that is only 10 years old and she only got involved in the Shot in recent times but she comes with a great attitude.

Melanie Smith made the long journey from Abbeylara on Sunday after qualifying the previous week. Pat Costello assures us that it was the most exciting iHHHigh Jump competition he has seen. The winner clearing 1.73metres for a new U/16 record, which was set by the current national senior champion, Deidre Ryan in 1997. The winner Aisling Croke (limerick) was clearing her own height and got an ovation for her outstanding performance. This was the class of competition that Melanie found herself in for her first All Ireland. Smith was not over-awed by the occasion, jumped very well with on five of the twelve finalists going higher. Melanie has achieved this standard on limited training as Lanesboro is not just ‘down the road’ from Granard.

The club had a well attended AGM on Wednesday night. An account of same should be in the notes next week.

Previously in the notes I stated that you could log into teamer.net for all the up-to-date news on the minor club but I got it a little wrong. The procedure is that you contact Jimmy Flood and he will set it in motion to have you registered. This is very essential for all players and their parents as a constant stream of information will be put up on the site on a very regular basis. Contact Jimmy by phoning 086-2540239.

The minor team played a draw in a tempestuous game against St. James on Sunday last in the special minor league in Ballyleague.

Team mentors are reminded that this year it is expected that they will furnish immediately following their games a report including scoreline, panel and scorers and a short description of the game. The report will be published on the club’s teamer.net website. The club see this new initiative an extremely important record of all the minor club activities now and into the future.
