St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Wednesday last was a day fitting for our national saint. The was bright and mild and the parade in his honour was to start at St. Faithleach’s club grounds at 2.30pm. The town was bedecked in flags and buntings and it was wonderful to see the effort being made by everybody. For the first time in living history a pig was being roasted on a spit by local butcher Terry Mc Loughlin and it proved to be a huge attraction and source of food for the ravenous throng that turned out to support the parade.

The parade duly commenced at the appointed time led by the local Gardai and Longford Pipe Band and it was not long before it came into view as it rounded the bend at the Lifebelt Bar. The crowd that lined the street was absolutely huge, the largest that has been seen in town since the parade started three years ago. The turnout is an acknowledgement to the participants and organisers for the excellent work they have done in the run up to St. Patrick’s Day.

The organising committee in the Lough Ree Co-Op, all the clubs, associations and businesses must take tremendous credit for the excellent parade and the efforts they put in to make it such a wonderful success.

The schedule for the day is 12:15 – Olaf 2 v Shannon Gaels, 13:00 – Olaf 1 v Newtowncashel/Killashee, 14:00 – Olaf 1 v Shannon Gaels, 14:45 – Olaf 2 v Newtowncashel/Killashee. Lough Ree Golfing Society

We had a wonderful turn out for our outing to Roscommon Golf Course on Saturday.

29 members took to the fairways which were in great shape despite the hard winter.

The greens were lovely smooth green carpets and very easy, especially for the President of Roscommon Golf club, Jim Finn.

Tiger would be very pleased indeed with some of the puts Jim made!! Thanks to the course committee of Roscommon for the wonderful conditions.

Once more the weather was kind to us and the sun shone most of the time we were out on the course, which in turn led to some good scores on the day:

First prize with 35 points was Sean Fayne, 2nd with 33: Sean Brennan, 3rd on 33 also was Patsy Fallon.

The front nine was won by Frank Conmy on 20 points and the back nine by Brendan Whitty on 16 points.

Josie Connaughton was nearest the pin with a superb shot on the 16th! Vera Whitty took the ladies prize.

Many thanks to all who participated, to the caterers at the club house, to the captain and committee, and a special thanks to Jim Finn, President of Roscommon Golf Club,

— also a member of our society,– for facilitating us on the day.

Our nest outing is to New Forrest Golf Club, Tyrellespass, on Saturday, the 1st May– Tee off at 10.30. See you all there.
