Search for a Star DVD

The much awaited ‘Search for a Star’ DVD is now on sale in O’Brien’s. Due to the economic climate we now find ourselves, this year, the club decided to sell the DVD at the cost price of €15.

Winning Starts

Congratulations to both the Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s senior teams who made a winning start to their respective league competitions. St. Faithleach’s had a great win away to county championship finalists Castlerea while Rathcline had an equally impressive away win over county champions of 2008 Colmcille. Well done to both teams and we hope for great things in 2010.

Wedding

The marriage took place recently at St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro, of Carmel Jordan daughter of JP and Margaret Jordan, The Green and Tom Rumley, son of Tommy & Kitty Rumley, Manulla, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Bridesmaid was Amanda Cheshire friend of the bride. Bestman was Alan Rumley brother of the groom. Page boys were Dean Ralph nephew of the groom and Jamie Daly nephew of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Michael Reilly, PP Lanesboro. And the wedding reception was held in the Shannon Key West Hotel, Rooskey.

We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Congratulations to Cathal Greene and Shane Donohue and their team mates who won the Leinster Vocational schools Championship last Saturday

Congratulations to minor player Gary Tobin who is a member of the band ‘Spruce’ who won Longford’s Got Talent at the weekend.

The club wishes the new executive of the senior club every success as they take up office. We wish them a hugely successful year ahead.

The Search for a Star DVD is now available and on sale in O’Brien’s. The cost of the DVD is €15.

Previously in the notes I stated that you could log into teamer.net for all the up-to-date news on the minor club but I got it a little wrong. The procedure is that you contact Jimmy Flood and he will set it in motion to have you registered. This is very essential for all players and their parents as a constant stream of information will be put up on the site on a very regular basis. Contact Jimmy by phoning 086-2540239.

Well done to the minor team and their mentors in getting their and the club off to a flying start after a wonderful game in Newtownforbes on Sunday.

Team mentors are reminded that this year it is expected that they will furnish immediately following their games a report including scoreline, panel and scorers and a short description of the game. The report will be published on the club’s teamer.net website. The club see this new initiative an extremely important record of all the minor club activities now and into the future.

We Welcome Gerard Kirwan Home

In the late sixties and early seventies the area between Dundrum and Sandyford was developed and in 1977 a new parish was formed and named after the largest new housing estate, Balally. This became the centre for a new GAA club, Naomh Olaf, which was founded in 1981. A measure of their success is that today there are in the region of 460 juvenile members, a remarkable number of young people.

Involved in the juvenile section of the club is a native from the Green, Gerard Kirwan – his son Conor also plays for the club. Indeed the Kirwan name for many years was synonymous with underage and senior club in Rathcline.

On Sunday 28th March Gerard and the Naomh underage players and mentors will come to Lanesboro to play in a three way mini tournament involving our under 12’s, and also the Newtowncashel/Killashee combination, Southern Gaels. This promises to be a wonderful day as we welcome back Gerard to the parish and his native club, Gerard.

The club is preparing to welcome our two visitors to town on the 28th and we are hoping that the parish will support the day and indeed offer their assistance in the preparation of the pitch and clubhouse. Please contact Jimmy Flood, Seadna Ryan, Sean Kenny, Brendan Keane or Joe O’Brien if you can make yourself available.

Coffee Morning supporting Daffodil Day

Ballyleague Lanesboro Active Age group will hold a Coffee Morning in support of national Daffodil Day on Friday week 26th march in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro from 11am to 1pm. You are encouraged to support an excellent cause.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

This year the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place between Thursday 27th May and Tuesday 1st June. The fully inclusive price is €715. The pilgrimage director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan P.P. Moate 090-6481180 and the director of the invalid section is Rev. Michael Scanlon P.P. Cloghan, Co. Offaly 090-6457122. Bookings can be made through Joe Walsh Tours, phone 01-2410812.

Support for Haiti

PJ Maher would like to express his deepest gratitude to everybody that supported his collection on the bridge last weekend.

As part of his fundraising campaign he will be holding a Quiz Night in Adie Farrell’s on this Friday night 19th March. It would be wonderful to see a full house for the quiz and as well as helping PJ’s fundraising for Haiti you can have some mighty craic.

On Saturday week PJ will hold a race night in the Lough Ree Arms and again your support will be deeply appreciated.

PJ will be off in a few weeks time and these are fund raisers to help reach his target.

Pilates continues in Lanesboro

Pilates continues in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro on Thursday evenings at 7pm. A new course will commence on Thursday 25th March.  Everybody is welcome to come along and join in. Pilates is suitable for all ages and abilities. All you need to bring along is your own mat. Further details are available by phoning Bonnie 087-2238237.

Ballyboro Scouts

Congratulation to Ballyboro Scouts who were runners up in the ‘County Challenge’ which took place in Forest Park, Boyle last Saturday week. The troop competed in such activities as aviation, pioneering, back woods cooking and first aid. The team members were Stephen Tobin, Stephen Donohue, Ryan Gill, Cian Donohoe, Stephanie Breslin, Mairead Cleary, Gordon Kelly and Daniel Mullooly. The team has now qualifies for the national finals to take place next month and we wish them every success.

Sympathy

Sympathy is extended to Pat Murray and family, Cloontuskert, on the recent death of his father, Tommy Murray, Foigha.

Our Tidy Town

Week on week the Lanesboro has county council workers only two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday, and in that time they are expected to clean the town from top to bottom, empty all bins throughout the town and do all other vital and  necessary work. This is an impossible task for the hard working men that continue to do their best for the town of Lanesboro and hinterland. You can only admire the amount of work that these men do in the short space of time allotted to them.

Last Friday the local ‘tidy towns’ team along with John L Farrell and the Fás team led an assault on the town and between the work by the council on Thursday and the work of John L Farrell and the Fás team the town was  left in remarkably clean state . We congratulate them one and all for their great work. It was tremendous to look up and down the street and see the town looking so spic and span.

The onus now falls on each and every one of us to make the effort to clean and maintain the great work of the past few days.

Sympathy

Sympathy is extended to the extended Dunne family Curraghroe on the recent and tragic death of on the death of Francis Dunne, Tipperary.

Death

The sudden death took place on Saturday 6th March of Paddy Whitney, Barnacor. Paddy and his wife Josie came to live in Lanesboro a number of years ago. Paddy was a native of Kenagh and had spent his working life in the aviation business in England until his retirement and his moving back to his native soil. His remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home until his removal to St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Thursday and following his Funeral Mass his remains were interred in Clonbonny Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to his wife Josie, sons, Stephen and Kevin, daughter Rosemary, relatives and friends on their sad loss.

Triathlon on 10th July

The triathlon series 25.5 is one of the oldest triathlon series in Ireland comes to Lanesboro on Saturday 10th July for the very first time. The triathlon will be part of the annual Summer School that takes place from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th July. The triathlon will be organised by former Olympic coach Sebastian Locteau in conjunction with the Teresa Costello and the Lough Ree Development Co-Op.

The triathlon will consist of a 500m swim going under the bridge, followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km through the woods and back to the town centre.

There will also be a mini triathlon for children and adults who want to try out the triathlon. The distances will be 100m swim, a 3km cycle and a 1km run. There will also be a 1km run for small children and their parents and this will take place during the main event and bring some fun to the whole event. It would be magnificent to see the whole community embracing this great occasion with contestant in all events.

This event comes one week after local triathlon enthusiast Colm Daly, Rathcline Road, will represent Ireland in the European championship in Athlone.

The entry fee is €35 for the 25.5 triathlons and €10 for the mini triathlon.

Now is the time to start training so as to be in excellent shape for the event.

 Lough Ree AC

Apart from the weekly training in Ballyleague Hall on Tuesday evenings, it has been reasonably quiet on the athletics front.

This is all about to change for several reasons (i) The second part of the Connaught Indoor Championships is fixed for next Sunday at the Nenagh complex. Melonie Smith and Rachael Costello are entered in the high jump events. Let’s hope they gain lots from the experience. (ii) Summertime and the long evenings are coming and this means the club will be going outdoors. (iii)The Secondary Schools Track and Field competitions will be starting immediately after Easter. (iv) Last but by no means least, the club’s own competition for Primary Schools in this area will take place in early April. Some warm up training would be in order for both the Secondary and Primary competitions.

AGM

Unfortunately the AGM is rather late this year. It has been fixed for Wednesday week 24th March at 9pm in the St. Mary’s parish Hall.

This meeting is hugely important for all the athletes in the club and it follows that the parents of these athletes not only should attend but must attend. If you have an interest in continuing the growth and the development of athletics in the area and you do not have competing family you are also encouraged to attend. The ideas and suggestions of everybody will be greatly appreciated
