Local Connection to recent Road Accident
A few months ago early one morning the news bulletins told us of an accident on the Longford Mullingar road. This life changing accident happened to a young man travelling to Dublin to carry out his days work. Unfortunately for the young man he has suffered a severe spinal injury. Joe Mc Cormack from a very popular GAA family in Carrickedmond was the unfortunate young man. Joe is married to local Cloontuskert girl Shirley Mc Caffrey daughter of Ann Marie and the late Eamon Mc Caffrey, Cloontuskert and sister to Tony, Strokestown Road, Damian, Ballyglass and Eamon and Shane both now resident in the US. They have three young children aged 11, 9 and 7 and the thought of a father not being able to go out and play with his young children is truly distressing.
For Joe life will never be the same and the renovations that will have to be made to his home will be both dramatic and expensive. To that end the local community in Carrickedmond have embarked on a fundraising campaign to help support Joe, Shirley and their young family and to make life as easy for him in the months and years ahead.
This Thursday evening local people from our Rathcline parish and GAA club will be making door to door calls throughout the parish. You are asked to either buy a ticket for the upcoming raffle €50 or make a generous contribution to the trust fund that has been recently set up. I know through your generosity you will support the family in helping to make life as easy as possible. There is a bank account opened by the trust fund in the Bank of Ireland Ballymahon and if you wish to contribute through that mode the account number is 38239543 and the sort code is 90-16-42. You can also leave your contribution in an envelope addressed Joe Mc Cormack Trust Fund in O’Brien’s Corner Shop. I thank you for your support in advance.
Rathcline on the up on Saturday next
Saturday next will see a great movement of local people making their way out west as they face the challenge of the world renowned Croagh Patrick. It is not too late to put your name forward for this test of stamina. The funds raised by the Rathcline club will go towards the funding of the wonderful development at their club grounds in Clonbonny. Your generous support will also be helping the Longford Hospice as the Rathcline are making a proportionate donation from the amount raised. Your support either in sponsorship or by climbing the ‘Reek’ will be greatly appreciated. Sponsorship cards are available in O’Brien’s or from Ciarán Donlon or Alan Fayne. Please be generous.

The indoor market continues each Friday at the Co-Op Hall, from 11am to 2pm, and it is going from strength to strength. Lough Ree AC
Cross-Country is a funny old sport and maybe that is why it is enjoyed so much.
After two outings to Connaught venues in Sligo and Ballinamore where the only achievements was “a good wetting”, it was with great trepidation that the club set off for Tuam, the venue for the Connaught uneven age groups, on Sunday last. Having travelled to places as far apart as Letterkenny, Waterford, Cork and Belfast, going to a venue no more than 200 yds from where one was born and reared was indeed a wonderful trip for our own Fabian Walsh and indeed the trip invoked so many memories.
To start with, the weather was an improvement and there was an extra bonus! The boys team were 3rd to Galway City Harriers and Claregalway AC with Ballina being in the unenviable 4th position. This squad was backboned by some Killoe youngsters who joined the club this year. These youngsters were first encountered at the Longford Primary Schools competitions last year. Will Messrs Keogh, Farrelly, and Harte take a bow for their contribution. The Floods and Donoghoe’s certainly appreciated their efforts. The fact that they turned up at the Co. Galway venue was a credit to their parents, when others did not , even though entry fees were paid – a usual bone of contention for the club.
The girls team of Larissa Noone, Rebecca Stavus, Orla Costello and Patrycya Jedrych were eight. Larissa was well placed early on but had not the fitness to maintain her effort. Indeed this fact could relate to all our youngsters. They are not fit enough for this level of competition and if some results were excellent – which they were – it was their natural ability that carried them through.
Both Rachael Costello and Dominic O’Reilly had no team support in their respective events but performed admirably in the circumstances.
For the first time in years the club has qualified a team for the All Ireland’s next month. The only problem is that Coleraine, Co. Derry is nearer to Scotland than to Lanesboro.
New Business
It is remarkable to note that, over the past number of weeks in a time of recession, Lanesboro has continued to open new businesses. That trend was continued last week when Gerard Farrell, son of Adie and Josephine Farrell, opened his new Agri Supplies business on the Rathcline Road. We wish Gerard many happy and successful years of trading.

Ballyboro
U11 Major League: Ballyboro Tigers V Castlepollard. Final Score 2-2.
Ballyboro came away with a draw away to Castlepollard in game played in wet & windy conditions. Boro were 1-0 down at half time. Stephen Walsh made it 1-1 five minutes into the 2nd half with Castlepollard going ahead 5 minutes later. Boro fought hard and came back into it with a great shot from Darren Nerney from 20 yards levelling the game once again. In the final 10 minutes of this game Boro put on a lot of pressure to get a winner but it was not to be. Best for Boro were: Darren Nerney, Stephen Walsh, Luke Parker, Ronan Healy, Keith Murphy, Gary Galvin, Daniel Foley, Evan Tynan & James Bennett.
U12 Premier League: Ballyboro Colts V Keenagh. Final Score 3-2.
This was a great win for Ballyboro Colts away to Keenagh. Boro were under a lot of pressure for the first 15 minutes and went 1-0 down in the 18th minute. 7 minutes before half-time Daniel Foley scored for Boro to level the game. The 2nd half saw Boro coming back very strong and Foley scored gaol number 2 with a fine header. Boro did not stop there and added goal number 3 when Keith Murphy got onto a ball and shot it to the corner of the net. Once again a good team performance from all 15 players who played a part in this game and thanks to parents for their support. Man of the Match – Iarla O’Sullivan.
