Lough Ree Athletic Club
The Longford Primary Schools Cross Country Championships took place on Saturday in the grounds of St. Mel’s College. The turnout was somewhat disappointing considering it was well publicised. Lanesboro and Fermoyle were represented but there was no sign of youngsters from Cashel, Killashee or Cloontagh.
Pride of place must go to sprinter Orla Keane (Fermoyle) who finished 4th in the girls 3rd and 4 class category proving that she has stamina to go with her speed. Events like the 400m and 800m should suit her later. Staying with this group, the Lanesboro Primary School team packed well with Aisling Casey leading them home in 5th position, followed by Rebedla Stavus (6th), Lauren Tansey (8th) Nadine Mc Carthy (9th) and Patryeya Jedrych (10th), good enough to win from Aughnagarron NS by 3 points. Rachael Gilligan, the individual winner, was the star of this group.
Fermoyle NS girls were the only school to finish a scoring 4 in the 5th/6th class category with Hayley Rooney (2nd), Sarah Farrell (3rd), Tanya Farrell (8th) and Niamh Chawke 10th.
The interesting runner here was Chloe Flanagan (Gaelscoil) who finished fourth. Why? He mother introduced herself as Helen Rodgers (Derryhaun) a former runner with the club. We correct that read a very good runner with the club. She was rated in the same bracket as Emer Molloy. Emer’s record for the Intermediate 800m of 2.11.55 in 1988 when competing for Mercy Ballymahon still stands to this day. Molloy got a scholarship to Villanova with Sonia O’Sullivan, is now married and living Boston. Yes! We enjoyed meeting Helen.
Back to the racing, the Boy’s 5th/6th class event had only Niall Keane who finished 16th was the only runner representing Fermoyle NS while Owen Murray (7th), Cillian Flood (8th), Cronan Flood (9th) and Danial Curran (11th) made up the 34 points to finish second behind a very strong Killoe squad in the 3rd/4th class event. All the above have qualified for the Connaught Finals in Sligo on 17th October.
Busy times ahead, as the Co Roscommon Championships for clubs takes place on Sunday next 4th October at the Racecourse in Roscommon town with events from under 11 upwards.
Blood Transfusion Service

It is great to see so many dropping into the market during its opening hours and it is also becoming a place that not only can you buy at the market but you can also sit down and have a cup of tea and have a chat with those that are also availing of the facility.

Juniors Win
Congratulations to the Rathcline Junior football team and panel and their team management of Seamus O’Brien and Denis Crinigan that had a tremendous win in the Junior Final against Ballymahon in Pearse Park on Sunday last. It was a tremendous occasion for the club and it was great to see team captain PJ O’Neill accepting the cup on behalf of the club. A great evening was had by all and it finished off in style with a club social in the Peer Inn.
High Flyer
Congratulations to Senan O’Grady who spent the summer out of college working and playing football in New York. Senan was an outstanding player throughout his time there with the Roscommon team. As he departed New York the team had just qualified for the Intermediate final in Gaelic Park against Dublin. Such was his value to the team that they flew him back out for the final on Sunday last where again he played a major role. Senan is son of Donal and the late Helen O’Grady, Ballyleague and we wish him much more success on the playing and college fields.
Another feature of the Roscommon victory comes in the form of former Rathcline stalwart Donal Mullooly who guided the team through to victory. Donal has toiled manfully as a player and in later years as a manger in within New York GAA and it is especially pleasing to see him getting his just rewards for his time and effort. May there be many more successful days for Donal and his team.
