Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Russians in Search of Credit Union Secrets!
Credit Unions across the Midlands are this week rolling out the “RED” carpet as they prepare to welcome a group of 30 Russian credit union students and activists to their localities. These visitors are part of a major study trip arriving here next Thursday June 4th to examine at firsthand how Irish Credit’s have become such a phenomenal success story worldwide.
Five local Credit Unions,-those in Lanesboro/Ballyleague, Longford, Roscommon, Mullingar and Clara will co-operatively host this impressive educational event in what should also be a fantastic promotional opportunity for all concerned. Their guests include Credit Union staff and volunteers from three separate regions across North-West Russia, – St. Petersburg, Karelia, and Dubna (North of Moscow). These Credit Union visits are an important aspect of a week-long educational module for students, sponsored by the Irish Credit Union movement. All of these students are deeply involved in developing credit unions in Russia, and moreover in the battle to grow the Credit Union ideal among their respective populations.
This major study trip to Ireland and the Midlands in particular, is part of the ongoing programme of the ‘Irish League of Credit Unions International Development Foundation’, which has as its central aim the promotion of the Credit Union model worldwide as a preferred approach to poverty alleviation in poorer countries. The “Foundation” is the body charged with making good use of the generous contributions made by hundreds of thousands of Credit Union member’s right across the 32 Counties of Ireland. As well as the three regions of Russia, these Irish contributions also support development project in places as far afield as Ethiopia, Ghana, The Gambia, Albania, and many more. All of these projects are closely managed on an ongoing basis by the Board of the Irish Foundation.
From a local perspective all of our Credit Unions have been very proactive in preparing a multi-faceted programme of activities for their Russian visitors which will include educational presentations, informational sessions, as well as providing a social and cultural aspect to the visit. This week-end Mullingar, Clara, Roscommon, Longford and Lanesboro/Ballyleague Credit Unions are busy putting the final touches to what should be a very interesting event next week right across the Midlands Region.
Pointers to the overall event:
It’s a one day visit to the Region on Thursday 4th June (day before the election)
The Russians will be divided into two groups, one visiting Clara CU and later Roscommon CU. The other group are bound for Mullingar CU and later Longford.
Both groups then jointly visit Lanesboro/Ballyleague CU
The day will conclude with a meal and a social evening in the local GAA Clubhouse which is being hosted by the local Credit Union. This will include an Irish Music Session which should be a fitting finale to the day.
For further information on this event or the work of the “Foundation” please contact Gerry Thompson or Lanesboro/Ballyleague C.U: Mary B. Murphy Manager 043 3321431
Roscommon Races
Weather permitting, next Sunday and Monday will be the first meeting of Roscommon Races for this year. It was disappointing that the previous scheduled meeting had to be called off due to the weather. If the weather that we have had over the weekend continues into next weekend it will make for a huge crowd on both evenings. It is an ideal way to spend an evening and meet up with old friends and indeed make many new friends. Go along and enjoy the athmosphere, there is nothing that beats the sight of horses in full flight competing before big crowds at the popular Roscommon track.

To avoid disappointment why not pre-order your fish at the co-op office. Orders must be placed before the Thursday of the week. Why not pay us a visit and pick up some good food.
The staff would like to thank Pauline Brennan for her help on Friday
Council and European Elections
This Friday will see the voting for the local council and European elections. It is very important that everybody should turn out and exercise their democratic right. There are three local men seeking election – sitting Councillor Adie Farrell in our local area and sitting Councillor Brendan Farrell in the Longford Town Council and Mid Longford area. There is also the challenge in our own area of Independent candidate Mark Casey.
We would like to wish the three candidates the very best of luck.
