Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 25th May’09

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Changes to Church

In the recent weeks there have been some changes to St. Mary’s Church. The old lighting has been replaced with bright new lighting on the inside while on the outside the church is receiving its first ever coat of paint. The doors and windows are also getting a major facelift with bright new colouring. Some of the railing around the church was beginning to rust and this has been replaced. There is also a new entrance on the old School Road side along with lighting on both entrance piers.

These alterations are causing a great deal of comment and the overwhelming consensus is one of a hugely positive reaction. The changes do make a huge change to the landscape of the area and when the job is fully finished it will be a job Fr. Mickey and the parish will be rightly proud of.

Heart Foundation

To say I am overwhelmed by your response to my ‘Kerry Walk’ in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation would be an understatement. The walk will take place from 12th to 14th June trough the beautiful area surrounding the Lakes of Killarney. Donations and pledges have come in from far and wide. I would like to thank those away from home that have sent money and also the support of locals for their most generous donations. To date there is in the region of €1,400 contributed and that is beyond my wildest dreams especially at a time of recession. As I have already mentioned, the cost of the weekend will be covered by me and all your contributions will go to the Irish Heart Foundation. I am greatly indebted to you for your kindness, generosity and wonderful support.

If you or any of your friends or family are affected by the heart muscle disorder cardiomyopathy, have Long QT Syndrome (a problem with the electrical system of the heart), have an ICD fitted – an implant device that monitors your heart rhythms and treats irregular rhythms – or have lost a young person to sudden cardiac death, help is at hand.

The Irish Heart Foundation has support groups run by people with firsthand experience of those concerns. If you require more information please contact Tracy Egan at the Irish Heart Foundation, phone 01-6685001 or email Tracy at tegan@irishheart.ie

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The Society had its first outing of the year on Saturday 16th May to Roscommon Golf Club. Although the weather was a inclement a hardy group of souls made their expectant journey to Roscommon. However all those that did venture out were rewarded with an invigorating and challenging experience. The new greens were excellent despite the wet conditions so well done to the Captain and course committee at Roscommon.

The winners on the day were: Overall winner with 30 points Colm Mc Crann; category 1 winner with 28 points was John Martin while category 2 winner with 26 points was Frank Conmy. The front nine winner with 17 points was Sean Fayne and the back nine winner with 18points was Brendan Whitty. Best lady score was won by Justina Farrell on 21 points. Nearest to the pin on the 12th hole was John James O’Shea. Well done to all and a special word of thanks to those members who travelled from far off places: Ballinamore, Dublin and Galway!

The next outing is to the lovely Portumna Golf Course on Friday, 24th July where hopefully the weather will be sunny and dry! If you wish to be included on the sheet you should contact the secretary 087-9730611. The tee has been booked from 12noon to 1pm and this would enable 27 players. The committee looks forward to welcoming a big number to this scenic golf course on the banks of the Shannon.

Roscommon Races

Unfortunately the first race meeting of the year at Roscommon Racecourse fell foul to the awful weather we are presently encountering. The expectation in the area was one of excitement until the dreaded news on Monday morning.

Each day of the Roscommon Races the area tends to be a day of good business and the work always seems to get done early to allow many to go racing. There is not a better evening out than to be in Lenabane watching the horses jumping and hopefully filling your pockets with lots of bookies money. We are lucky to be in an area so close to such a fine track and it is great to travel in and meet neighbours and old friends also enjoying this excellent social event.

The meeting for the rest of the year are; an afternoon meeting on  Sunday 7th June, and evening meetings on Monday 8th June, Monday 6th July, Tuesday 7th July, Tuesday 4th August, Monday 17th August, Monday 7th September and the final meeting of the year is an afternoon meeting on Monday 28th September.

After each race meeting there is a Race Dance in the Abbey Hotel and it is a great way of finishing off a brilliant day. You can dance the night away to some of Ireland’s leading dance bands. Make a date for one of the meetings and feel the buzz of a great day out.

Shannon Gaels

Are there club jersies hanging around your house. There are a couple of jersies from the under 16 and under 18 sets missing and if you could drop them to Sean Kenny or into O’Brien’s shop it would be much appreciated.

Training for under six, eight, ten, tweleve will take place at the same time each week in Clonbonny, on Thursdays  from 7pm to 8 pm.The club has decided to try this initiative as a pilot, to help parents who have many activities during the week, having to go to many locations for activities, often on the same night.Training for all other grades continues as scheduled.

The second round of  matches in the under 14,16 and minor leagues are set to continue over the coming weeks. The draws for the championsip competitions will be finalised in the next two weeks.

Parents are reminded of the GAA Summer Camp, which is scheduled for Clonbonny, from Monday 29 June to Friday, 03 Jul. Early application is recommended as places wil be limited on a first come, first served basis.

Lough Ree AC

Lanesboro AC hosted the County Roscommon championships for the under 9, under 10 and under 11 age groups. This is based on a team basis (teams of two) with three teams from the county to qualify for the Connaught championships next month. A new idea! The plan is having its teething problems at the moment.

It seems to be harder to get ‘sunshine’ than results from some officials. The results to hand are: Ball Throw – Lara O’Sullivan is the county champion in the girls under 11 while Liam Harte took the title in the under 11 boys. Zoe Mc Dermott won the gold medal in the under 10 age group. Silver runners up medals went to Orla Keane under 9, Liam Ross under 9, Eamon Keogh under 11, Seoige Mulvihill girls under 10Sean Maguire boys under 10. Bronze medals came the way of Pauric Sorohan, and Niamh Chawke at under 11. While most of the youngsters improved their throw, Luke Lisle was down over 8 metres, a considerable drop. His best would have got him into the medals.

On the track, Orla Keane won the under 9 sprint title, while Liam Ross and Seadna Ryan were 2nd and 3rd in the boy’s event. There was a photo-finish to the Boys under 11 event 100m involving Owen Murray, Eamon Keogh and Niall Farrelly. The jury are still out on that on that one! There should the makings of a good relay team.

In the middle distance events, the same three boys were involved with Eamon Keogh taking the gold, Niall Farrelly the silver, and Owen Murray the bronze. Bryn Peters was 2nd in the under 10 category. The flag was kept flying with Lara O’Sullivan finishing 2nd and Niamh Chawke in third place. Zoe Mc Dermott also took a bronze in the under 10 race.

Long Jump: This seems to be the weakest event even though the club has a fine long jump pit. The talented Liam Harte again took the gold and Zoe Mc Dermott and Rose Weafer bronze while Rachael Flynn, Orla Costello and Éanna Donoghoe were well in contention with very good performances. Luckily there were no relays; otherwise there would have been some disappointed youngsters.

Congratulations to all that took part and best wishes to those that qualified for the Connaught Finals in two weeks time.
